The opinion piece, “The Athlete as Agent of Change”by Lonnie Bunch and David Skorton from the Washington Post discusses the changes athletes bring that challenge convention because of their fame. I believe that athletes should use their fame to promote a political agenda because as American citizens, we have rights. The freedom to express ourselves and freedom of speech was clearly stated in the Constitution. When, in paragraph one, it says, “An athlete silently protests during the national anthem. People respond with angry taunts of ‘traitor,’ ‘you’re a disgrace,’ and ‘leave our country!’”, the people were not being very kind. If an athlete wants to protest because of their political beliefs, then they should be allowed. Their fame would help

The article I chose for my connection is an article about an NFL player saying goodbye to the league because of boycott. Colin Kaepernick was signed to a new team, because he quietly refused to stand for the national anthem during each game, an act meant to protest police brutality but widely condemned as unpatriotic. Kaepernick says he is sticking to his cause. Other players are starting to boycott to his cause. One player from the Seahawks Michael Bennett has made it clear that he supports the same cause that Kaepernick does.…

Lately, many issues about expressing political views publicly have surfaced. People have been protesting during the national anthem, this, in turn, is causing an uprising about when should people be allowed to protest. People should be able to protest whenever they feel like because that is part of their constitutional right to freedom of speech. Toni Smith author of “A Leader is More Than a Messenger” writes about how everything is advertised during major events. She goes on to explain how sports are filled with political messages even though they relate nothing to the sport itself.…

NFL Protest The most recent major sports league uproar has been the protests during our National Anthem. NFL players across every team have been kneeling, linking arms, or even just staying in the locker room. President Donald Trump spoke out about the situation on Twitter saying that the players should be suspended or fired for “disrespecting” our country. One of the points made by Trump was his approval of the players that were locking arms and complete disappointment by those who chose to kneel or stay in the locker room. I personally believe that it is your choice to kneel, lock arms, or stay in the locker room.…

These athletes have received a lot of unwarranted backlash for an action that has been considered a sign of reverence since ancient times, when Jesus Christ knelt as a mark of his faithfulness. To take this clear message of protest and construe it into a disrespect to the United States is completely illogical, and more than likely has to do with partisan politics than anything else, even getting a brash response from President Trump. Despite my desire to stay in the middle, and my frequent inability to even know what is happening, if I ever figure out, I have no quarrel with taking a knee for any…

Professional sports players have meant a lot to the U.S. for many generations. But people nowadays think that these big, money making machines are being disrespectful to our country. It's actually going towards Toni Smith, the then 21-year-old senior guard on the Manhattanville College women’s basketball team.…

In the column “We Have Nothing Left to Hold Us Together,” American columnist, Ben Shapiro, argues against athletes protesting the national anthem. He contends that the anthem symbolizes proud American ideals and unity, and that protesting it undermines the rights Americans hold and the ideologies they stand for. Shapiro’s claim that the anthem is a symbol for an ideal America, and the act of kneeling during, especially by privileged football players, only divides America is incorrect. Even though Shapiro states that love of country does not require love of all aspects of America, he says it means understanding what it was founded on. He claims that our founding fathers founded America on “a uniquely good basis.”…

While many believe kneeling the anthem is a great place to protest, kneeling during the anthem is disrespectful to the people that have served our country, since there are other ways to protest and there is another proper time to do it. Though kneelers believe that kneeling during the anthem is proper and not disrespectful because no one is getting physically hurt and this a great time for the football players to use their persuasion powers. These reasons are wrong because the football players shouldn’t use their persuasion for these reasons and get into these topics. Football players shouldn’t be able to make decisions for citizens and convincing other people that disrespecting the flag is good.…

News of professional football players such as Colin Kaepernick and other athletes refusing to stand for the national anthem flood the headlines of American media today. These high profile individuals do not care, maybe even refuse to acknowledge, that their forgetfulness of their great American heritage and their disrespect for the symbol of our freedom, the American flag, has a very harmful impact on others. These high profile individuals’ overt actions towards the symbol of our freedom, the American flag, not only show their forgetfulness of our great heritage, but are also blinding others like high school athletes to do the same. To me, and the majority of Americans, particularly those who put themselves in harm’s way, their families and those who have lost loved ones doing so, this is very…

In the days that followed the president issued a series of tweets reiterating his views and calling for a fan boycott of games” (The Associated Press). Donald Trump using his platform as president in this matter is inevitably creating this conception of “A Nation Divided”. This statement is forcing society to take either the side of President Donald Trump’s dislike of the protest or the side of “Sports United”. This symbolically gestures that due to Donald Trump’s superior influential platform that his declarations and positions take precedence over that of professional athletes. Although, The Associated Press presents the audience with these two colliding views they still make it evident that you should be educated on each side of the spectrum, “racial injustice and police mistreatment of African-Americans has become obscured by the narrower issue of how to act during the anthem.…

In Kelly Michugh-Stewart’s article, “My Father Died in Afghanistan, and I Support Colin Kaepernick,” minor instances of the National Anthem being disrespected in the N.F.L. and an individual’s ways of exercising their rights are expressed. Michugh-Stewart’s piece puts her own personal experiences at N.F.L. games as examples of when the National Anthem was carelessly disrespected without a reason. The piece argues that these acts of disrespect are much worse than current N.F.L. athlete, Colin Kaepernick, disrespecting the flag for a reason. Also, she points out that it is nobody’s place to tell any individual, besides themselves, how to exercise their rights, specifically how one chooses to protest for a certain cause. By pointing this out…
