When material is transported along coast the process is called longshore drift. Waves follow the direction of the prevailing wind. They hit the coast at an oblique angle, the swash carries the material up the beach,in the same direction as the waves. The backwash then carries material down the beach at right angles, back towards the sea. This means that there is a weak positive relationship between sediment size and distance along the beach. Therefore as you travel up the beach the sediment size gets larger. This suggests that erosional processes maybe happening to sediment size.
