In physics, a wave can be defined as a disturbance or oscillation (movement back and forth in a regular rhythm) that travels through space and matter which transfers energy from one place to another. When studying waves it is important to remember and know that waves only transfer energy, not matter.
Types of waves:
- Transverse wave: A transverse wave is a wave in which the particles of the medium move a perpendicularly (at a right angle) to the direction of the wave. This type of wave occurs, are produced in water and its movement goes up and down when observing it.
- Longitudinal wave: A longitudinal wave is a wave in which the particles of a medium move back and forth. An example of a longitudinal wave is the sound wave that …show more content…
Secondly, vibrate and stretch it in a perpendicular direction to the length of the string and observe its pattern. The highest point of a wave is called crest which is labelled C and the lowest point of a wave is called trough which is labelled as T. So as the wave propagate (extends) left to right, the waves vibrate upwards and downwards which creates a transverse wave in the string.
Electromagnetic waves examples:
Cell phones, as we know, are used for communication, music, GPS and social media. Cell phones are electromagnetic waves because they use radio waves and are huge in the technological field. They play an important role into helping people communicate efficiently and they allow us to maintain knowledge about events faster.
Microwaves, they are electromagnetic waves and have wavelengths approximately in the range of 30 cm (frequency = 1 GHz) to 1 mm (300 GHz). Microwaves pass a radiation and usually at a frequency of 2450 MHz (a wavelength of 12.24 cm) through the food. Microwaves have a high frequency and shorter wave lengths. Microwaves have different categories
