Happiness is a phenomenon that encompasses a person’s inner and outer feelings that affect the society as a whole from day to day. The idea of happiness in America is that it can be measured by a person’s income, success, and assets. Others measure happiness as the love that they receive from others, the environment, and their inner day to day emotional state. Happiness can intensify a person’s inner feelings and positively translate those feelings to a counterpart, which can lead to societal success. This would lead to a influx in productivity for employers, because verbal and non verbal communication affects the manner in which their employees do their jobs.…
It is impossible to lead a fulfilling life in a society with constant threats of attacks. Similarly, people who are sick in hospitals do not enjoy their lives irrespective of the amount of money that they have. To them, recovering from the sickness is what will enable them to achieve happiness. However, the poor are also not happy in life despite the fact that they are in good health or have close friends. Thus, I believe happiness encompasses a wide range of factors that make life…
What is “happiness” and how is it obtained? The word “happiness” is defined as ‘a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy’. The decisions people make on a day-to-day basis are to reach the ultimate goal of being happy. While everyone strives to obtain happiness, not everyone succeeds. In today’s society, happiness seems to be directly correlated with factors such as wealth or status.…
A family either has the ability to be happy or to not be happy. Happiness, whether granted or earned, should be sought within family, not money or elsewhere. Dependence on practical and emotional support ordinarily lands upon family. It provides a state of comfort that leads to happiness. Reminiscing through the plethora of memories a family has built together also provides the same well-being.…

Jon Krakauer’s novel, Into The Wild, presents the question, to what extent is community essential to happiness? Based on the actions illustrated by the main character, Chris Mccandless and humans in general, it’s fair to say that we don’t need people in order to be happy. Community can be defined as, “A feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.” As humans, we are so diverse and unique that we sometimes can’t find a community where our goals, interest or attitudes are reciprocated by others. Though society does believe we need relationships with parents, mentors and friends to be happy; Chris showed that we did not need these relationships to be happy.…
Defining happiness is an incredibly difficult idea to portray. Different things make different people happy and there are so many ways that a person could express what happiness means. Webster’s Dictionary defines it as an agreeable feeling or condition of the soul arising from good fortune or propitious happening of any kind and the possession of those circumstances or that state of being, which is attended with enjoyment. Researchers claim that up to half of a person’s happiness comes from their genes. However, happiness is not determined by your biological makeup, but rather your mindset and the external influences around you.…

Everyone has their own individual definition of happiness. Richard Taylor describes happiness as “a state of being, not a mere feeling” (Taylor, 116), but how may one come to this total state of fulfillment? Vivien Sung who wrote Five-Fold Happiness and Richard Taylor who wrote a chapter on happiness in his book An Introduction to Virtue Ethics both agree that happiness is made up of many different parts. Because happiness is made up of different components, achieving prosperity, longevity, and wealth are three elements that can lead to being fully…
Not only can I find meaning by nurturing my newfound friendships, but I can also generate meaning by maintaining the relationships with my family and friends back home. This source of generating meaning to contribute to my happiness is justified in the same way as strengthening my newfound friendships. According to Wolf’s theory, these actions have subjective appeal and objective validity. Nurturing these relationships will require special attention and care because I no longer see my family or old friends every day, therefore nurturing these relationships is done out of ‘reasons of love.’ I believe family and friends (whether old or new) are important examples of aspects of a happy life.…
Happiness is interesting, as it could be described as both a feeling and a place. For some people happiness is doing what you love as long as you’re surrounded by people that you love. But for others happiness is more superficial and could simply be a mundane destination such as Maui, Hawaii. Both Susan Orleans and Eric Wiener in their books, My Kind of Place and The Geography of Bliss expose what it means to be happy and if happiness is found or achieved. These works are similar in that they both follow two different adults on their expeditions around the globe.…

Happiness, a form of wellness that comes from within the soul, an expression of gratitude, kindness and a form of close relationships that form around a static drive for happiness. The American dream, being able to achieve your goals and live in prosperity, to render a greater level of happiness. The wealthy is recognized by a majority of people at the moment of time as delighted and stress-free. Yet the statistics the film provides disproves this hypothesis and presents evidence, from non-wealthy individuals, that they have all their needs from close friends, family support, and activities that involve physical exercise. Each interviewed individual enlightened the idea of happiness by concluding that close family relationships and social gatherings…
According to Coopersmith’s definition, self-esteem is “the evaluation which the individual makes and customarily maintains with regard to himself: it expresses an attitude of approval and indicates the extent to which an individual believes himself to be capable, significant, successful and worthy. In short, self-esteem is a personal judgment of the worthiness that is expressed in the attitudes the individual holds towards himself.” (p. 4–5) To put it more simply, self-esteem is the attitude that people have toward their own…
Also, it is misleading to mix between happiness as a wonderful feeling and the causes of happiness. For example, when I was in my senior year of high school, I applied to a scholarship to study in the US, but the acceptance rate was very low for international students. In fact, it was that station of my life, where I exerted all my mental and physical effort in order to gain this golden opportunity to study what I love. Despite the fact that it was truly hard to get this scholarship, I was one of those five students who got the scholarship. I was in my room in my high school dorm when I received the scholarship acceptance notification.…
