The life of a soldier in World War One was one filled with death, destruction, and atrocity. For many, the reality in which they existed proved too much for what one person could handle. A soldier often returned a different man, both physically and psychologically. In Joseph Boyden’s Three Day Road”, the main characters Elijah and Xavier are subjected to this reality. In contrasting the different personalities of Elijah and Xavier, one can demonstrate how war is experienced by individuals in very different ways.…

When the Dust Witch came in the balloon, Will decides to fight back with his archery kit instead of hiding. Even when the Bow shattered into pieces he “drew back and with all his strength threw the arrowhead” (p.151). Towards the end of the novel, Will continues to show courage.…

In addition to the physical problems and realities of people lacking basic necessities for life Salva is also is facing emotional and physiological issues with the loss of his family and the isolation within itself. In these incredibly tough times salva has shown how hope can be as important than food and water can be. It’s amazing how someone can survive in those circumstances, but much more how he found the way to want to survive, that requires finding a source of determination, hope, and strength. The first way that I noticed the determination and optimism within Salva was with him and his uncle. Salva has collapsed in the middle of the desert not only defeated by hunger and thirst, but emotionally drained with everything else going on, his uncle urges him to keep moving and pleading him to take it day by day, one step at a time, to keep moving forward.…

The Kite Runner Excerpts (Chapters 1-8) As I read Chapter 6, I saw many similarities between Amir’s life and my life. It was very easy to relate to this chapter due to the “every child’s winter dream” setting. As Amir described himself waking up and walking outside to view the snow, I saw my sister and I waking up early to witness fresh fallen snow, and putting on our boots to set our footprints. When he described the winter kite tournaments, I related that to my neighborhood’s snowman contest.…

Harriet Beecher Stowe is a famous abolitionist and author whose novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin had an impact on the end of slavery in the United States. She is credited with saying, "It is a matter of taking the side of the weak against the strong, something the best people have always done." By this quote I believe that she is saying that it is the duty of good people to stand up for people who cannot speak up for themselves. It does take tremendous courage to speak out because the act of speaking out makes you a target. Throughout history many people have suffered and even died for speaking out against evil.…

Civil Disobedience Slavery and war have been known to be around for many years. Henry David Thoreau, author of the book Walden and “Civil Disobedience”, wrote “There are thousands who are in opinion opposed to slavery and to the war, who yet in effect do nothing to put an end to them” (Thoreau 270) My interpretation of Thoreau’s quote is that there are many people that disagree with slavery and war, but do nothing to stop it. There are large numbers of people in this world who want to end slavery or want to stop wars. There are also people who want to take a stand and say something, but don't have a solution in how to end it.…
