A positive long term effect is that it will prevent ovarian cancer. It also protects against endometrial cancer. The pill will continue to protect against these cancers eve after a woman stops taking it. Other positive long term effects include less acne, birth control will ease menstrual headaches, and ease heavy or painful periods. Negative long term effects include the increased risk of cervical and liver cancers. The increased risk for cervical cancer is because, “oral contraceptives may change the susceptibility of cervical cells to the HPV infection, affect their ability to clear the infection, or make it easier for the HPV infection to cause changes that progress to cervical cancer”(CITATION CANCER.GOV). There is an increased risk for liver cancer because although most of the tumors in the liver that are formed are benign, some do become malignant. Oral contraceptive can also increase blood pressure, and because there are extra hormones in the body, women are more likely to get blood clots. The risk for high blood pressure and blood clotting while on birth control increases if a person smokes. Also, it can cause increased hair growth, and a dark pigmentation to the skin. Birth control is the biggest product covered by the insurance companies. This is because it is cheaper for them to cover the cost of the contraceptive rather than the cost of doctor's visits and hospital stays when a woman is
