Long Term Effects Of Ocean Pollution

Improved Essays
Out of sight out of mind is a perfect way to describe why people pollute this mentality is exemplified even more when it comes to the ocean as we can only see a tiny percent of it.Even though fighting pollution won’t be good for the economy , people should stop or reduce pollution as much as possible because it will destroy the fishing market and the ocean as a whole.
One of the most noticeable forms of ocean pollution are oil spills. An oil spill is the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, due to human activity and is a form of pollution. Oil spills may be due to releases of crude oil from tankers, offshore platforms, drilling rigs and wells, as well as spills of refined petroleum products (such as gasoline, diesel). While most oil spills happen in the water they can also happen on land.Oil spills have many effects on the environment the most obvious being oil being stuck in birds feathers and poisoning fish.but there are many long term effects people do not know about.A PLoS ONE study shows

Have you ever been swimming in an ocean, and you notice a plastic bag or bottle floating in the water? There are many ways people can pollute the oceans. For starters, oil tankers spill oil into the water (Doc 2.). Boats sink (Doc 2), and eventually the boats break up into pieces and spread across the ocean floor (OI). Next, people dump sewage and garbage from boats and on beaches (Doc 2).…

The oil spill will also pollute the ecosystem, altering the overall health of the communities in this ecosystem such as, the rainforest, the mangroves and the tidal flats. Oil spills can affect animals and plants in two ways: form the oil its self or the clean up method. The oil can affect the organisms internally from being absorbed, inhalation or ingestion and externally from irritation of skin and eyes, as it is extremely poisonous and can also suffocate the animals (Response and Restoration, 2016). The oil also flats on top of the water and as it is a dark, thick suntanned, it prevents any sunlight passing through the water which ultimately affects any organisms solely relying on the sun’s energy, such as producers like plankton or sea grass. These producer use sunlight as there source of food through photosynthesis, and without these producers, the consumers in the food chain have nothing to feed off resulting in a decrease in organisms and can prove fatal for…

All over the world there are so many types of issues that are destroying and harming planet Earth. This includes, air pollution, thermal pollution, and soil pollution, but there is one more thing that is very important, which is called an oil spill. An oil spill is the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, and is a form of pollution. Most of the time oil spills happen in the marine but sometimes happen on land. Not many people think about oil spills, this is because people think that oil spills are not as important, and do not create threats that much.…

When oil is spilled, the government has to spend money cleaning it up. They spent over 1 million dollars cleaning up oil each year. Some jobs, such as fishermen, can’t make enough money because the animals are dying from the oil. If there was an oil spill in an area that heavily relies on the tourism industry, they would suffer economically. Many jobs, people, and governments are losing money, according to istf.ucf.edu, when the oil could just be controlled more…

Research Paper Pollution is a problem, and the everyday third grader could grasp that concept. However, what the effects of specific pollutants are, seems to be less clear. Each individual pollutant has a different effect on a different aspect of the ocean and the organisms that live in it. One important type of pollutant is an Endocrine disruptor, or to be more specific: Diethyl Phthalate. Said compounds and their results on the live marine organisms need to be studied so that the level at which these chemicals produce harmful effects must be studied, monitored, then reduced.…

The way we neglect our ocean with heavy amounts of pollution can potentially affect our lives in a negative manner. Driving cars and the use of plastic is essential to our daily lives, but we use them without the concern for how they are affecting the habitats on Earth. Some people think that the chance that they are doing harm to the ocean is less important to them than cost or inconvenience of fixing a pollution problem. Through sources from researchers and scientists, they have found evidence of pollution caused by the two essential commodities in our lives, plastic and burning fossil fuels. Environmentalists have found solutions to reduce the plastic waste in our ocean as well as attempting to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere…

Crude oil can choke a marine organism, it can cause an animal to get stuck in it (and drown), and has chemicals that can be deadly to animals. The oil spill endangered the intertidal zones of the Persian Gulf, the mangrove forests, and the wildlife habitat of the area. The shallow water of the gulf provided feeding grounds for birds and nursery areas for marine organisms. With the endangerment of these habitats due to the lack of food (destroyed from the crude oil), it endangered the entire Persian Gulf. The oil spill approximately killed 30,000 water birds.…

Ships are the global transportation of people and cargo by sea, but it can also be extremely harmful to the planet. The reason why ships can be extremely harmful to the planet is shipbreaking. Shipbreaking is when rundown ships around 25-30 years old are broken down to metals for reuse. I encourage to reinforce stronger environmental and labour laws on shipbreaking because it can lead to chemicals and oil leaking out to sea. Workers who are also involved in shipbreaking have zero to little safety guidance and safety equipment.…

Oil Spills and How They Affect The Environment Oil spills, no matter how small or large, effect the worlds environment by their destroying and poisoning any habitat they come in contact with, mainly the water though. These spills can be devastating because they disrupt what we know as the food chain. The food chain starts with producers who are ate by small animals which are ate by larger and larger animals until the top predator is reached, humans. Oddly enough, humans are the main reason the food chain is being destroyed. In our fight to reach economic prosperity we rarely take in consideration the environment, which is partially what life is based on.…
