Heroin has long term effects. You develop a tolerance for the drug. You need more of the drug to get the kind of high that you want. Long term heroin users are at higher risk of getting an overdose. They increase their risk by abusing heroin through injections, mix heroin with other drugs, are depressed or suicidal, and have gone through a overdose before. If a person has overdosed on heroin it is crucial to get medical attention right away. A primary concern during an overdose is the sudden drop in blood pressure and breathing. Luckily, doctors can stop the effect with medication, which can save the person’s life if they get to the hospital in time. Users that have used heroin for a long time and decide to get clean, their tolerance for the drug will decrease. Many long-term users who have been clean for weeks or months have overdosed when they started using again due to the lack of tolerance they no longer
