Response to "Bring Back Flogging" Jeff Jacoby is a strong advocate for bringing some of the corporal punishment ideals from the Puritans back into modern society. Additionally, the reasons Jacoby gives are agreeable and have an abundant number of sources to back them up. I personally agree with the author's stance on corporal punishment as well as his reasonings for such an opinion. These reasons being: (1) The price of keeping criminals incarcerated is expensive especially with how many inmates there are and (2) The prisons are bursting with overpopulation.…
Stephen Bright takes a clear stance when discussing capital punishment. He associates the death penalty with the many other practices which have long been abandoned. These practices include whipping, branding, cutting off appendages, maiming, and other primitive forms of punishment. It is clear that Stephen Bright believes the United States should abandon the death penalty. In fact, his essay is written in a way which assumes that the United States will inevitable abandon capital punishment.…
Rape: Nature or Nurture? Women are overrepresented in the rape victim pool. Men can be victims of rape as well, but rape mainly effects women (Miller 383). This leads theorists to the question: what is different in males that causes them to rape far more often than females? Often, the answer stems from either a nature or nurture standpoint.…
This offender sodomized his victims to inflict more pain in them than he had already caused by raping them.…
In today’s society, debates over what to do about overcrowded prisons are not uncommon. While a life sentence is often seen as more humane than the death penalty, it also takes up space in the prisons, and therefore tax dollars. However, in this effort, crime has less of a deterrent in the absence of practices that are now considered barbaric, such as whipping. In response, Jeff Jacoby, in his essay “Bring Back Flogging”, argues an unpopular, but potentially problem-solving, point of view; he asserts that corporal punishment should be re-adopted by the United States. To accomplish this, he specifically targets popular counterarguments to showcase his powerful logical backing.…
As long as societies continue to utilize the death penalty as a form of punishment there will always be the question of, is it justified and does it help in preventing crime? Many principles have been influenced from the deontological perspective, that justice demands that the guilty are punished. Also, that punishment must proportionate to the crime, as well as justified (Williams & Arrigo, 2012). When considering an individual’s level of deviance, it would be difficult to determine if they are fact suffering from a mental disorder or avoiding execution. In my opinion, the decision on whether they are fit to be executed should rely on a psychiatric evaluation given by a team of physicians, along with court proceedings.…
Circumcision has been around for hundreds of thousands of years. Many religions command their followers be circumcised while others practice the ancient tradition for the presumed health benefits. However, more and more parents opt out of for various reasons such as the health benefits are not proven and the process of circumcision is counter intuitive to the partners rule of not hurting their child. Parents are allowed to choose if their baby gets circumcised, but if their reasonings are such listed earlier, they are misguided and are incorrect. When someone is questioned if their circumcision was painful, they would say they don't remember the experience.…
Over a century later, it has made an unfortunate comeback in a more sterile environment. The form of punishment is carried out by isolating…
Punishment Philosophy Punishment is seen as one of the pillars of life and society. Yet the view of punishment is deeply intertwined with the different philosophies of punishment that have become norms throughout time. While many see punishment through polarized lenses of retribution and vengeance, it should be utilized as a positive tool towards rehabilitation which in turn turns the heart away from sin.…
Doctors taught patients that it led to insanity and other terrible diseases. Guilt and fear were drilled into young people from an early age. Anti-masturbation devices were also made to discourage and control the sexual thoughts and urges of masturbation. The human devices, mostly made for boys, consisted of sharp points directed inwards to jab the penis if he should get an erection during the night, or an electrical system was set in place to deliver electrical shocks.…
The first of which is that pedophilia is a mental disease rather that some criminal decision. The passage “The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines pedophilia as an intense and recurrent sexual interest in prepubescent children, and a disorder if it causes a person ‘marked distress or interpersonal difficulty’ or if the person acts on his interests,” shows that this is actually a mental illness and not a choice. Pedophiles all around the world are being treated poorly just because of a disease they have. They are treated so poorly that they could be prohibited from different types of job opportunities and even educational opportunities. An example given in the article is about HIV and AIDS.…
A primary target market is described as a company’s main intended audience for the product they are selling. The product that Pfizer is selling is pharmacological medications that fit a certain segment of people with diseases that the company will be able to gain the most profit. In business, the producer and consumer should gain a profit from the sale of chemical to treat a disease and the consumer who finds relief from the disease. The primary target for Pfizer is both male & female, adults & children. The demographics of each of these segments incudes the financial status and social status of the customers.…
Implementation of punishment is one of the key issues that has been problematic throughout history. Recently, prison sentences is the most favorable type of punishment given to criminals worldwide. How much prison time depends on the severity of the crime that is committed. However, there has been new alternative punishments introduced by scholars that claim are more effective and fairer than imprisonment. Graeme Newman argues that corporal punishment should be given through electric shocks.…
Summary Criminology studies the reasoning and factors as to why individuals engage in criminal activities. In classical criminology, social philosophers Cesare Beccaria and Jeremy Bentham developed a theory of crime that criminologist and theorist still use today (Akers 2017). In classical criminology, an individual commits a crime by making a rational decision. That decision is based off of whether the benefits that one might receive by offending outweighs the consequences such as being caught and cited or sentenced. Individuals base their decision to offend or not offend on what they have seen others suffer, their knowledge of what consequences they may endure and their own personal experiences.…
Though found in females too, circumcision is commonly applied to males, where the definition can be known as the practice of removing the foreskin, also called the prepuce, from the glans (head) of the human male genitalia. Circumcision, precisely male infant circumcision, has been practiced around the world for centuries, some continuing today. It can be predominantly found as a religious obligation in Jewish communities and the Muslim world and as a cultural practice in the United States of America, the Philippines, and South Korea; elsewhere is considered rare. Besides cultural and religious reasons, a great deal of people have practiced it for other reasons, namely medical and personal reasons. With apparent favorable reasons, as well…
