The things people say to you can replay in your head for years. “Those students who are face-to-face bullied, and/or cyberbullied, face increased risk for depression, PTSD, and suicidal attempts and ideation”, said by Professor Blumenfeld of Iowa State University. (Schwartz 2010) A new Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why, follows the life a high school student, Hannah Baker, and the road that lead her to take her life. She leaves behind 13 tapes, each for a person that contributed to her decision. In an episode, a friend of hers said that she only did this for attention. That may be the case for some people. A friend of mine attempted suicide freshman year of high school. As I was walking down the hall, I hear a fellow classmate say, “Emily totally did it for attention”. Detention and suspension wasn’t what the kids need. Because bullying is an epidemic and in some cases, result in suicide, all 50 states now have laws against bullying. You can take legal action if you feel that it is going too far. (Schwartz 2010) People debate on whether jail time is an appropriate punishment for students. A 15-year-old girl, Phoebe Prince, was bullied for over 3 months. She committed suicide and weeks later, the students that bullied her were charged with crimes. They would have 10 years of jail time if found guilty. Will the law prevent this from happening again? (Morais 2010)
To raise awareness, schools have programs to prevent bullying. They try to change the atmosphere of the school instead of focusing only on punishments. They strive to promote acceptance and standing up for your peers. (Morais 2010)
Bullying will be around for many more generations to come. Some see it as a rite of passage that is just a part of growing up. (Backstrom 2010) We can only try to prevent it from getting worse. We need to enforce strict laws and punishments in hopes of this getting better. Kids will be kids and you may think there is nothing you can do. Even if you don’t know the person, speak up and stand up for those that need help. Schools need to have a zero tolerance for bullying and take complaints seriously. We need to let everybody know that this is a serious issue and it could save a
