The American Civil War was driven by long-term causes and short-term causes. The long-term causes are the Wilmot Proviso and the Compromise of 1850.
The addition of the new lands due to the consequence of the Mexican War caused the South and the North to argue on either these are should allow slavery or not. The Wilmot Proviso was a step to ban slavery from these new areas that was first initiated by David Wilmot, a US congressman, in the 1846. The African Americans played important roles in the Civil War. They served for both sides of the army (Union and Confederate) during the war. Approximately 179 000 African American in the North contributed in the war by serving as army however those in the South only served the labor positions since there were still considered as slaves. Other than that, the African Americans also served as nurses and blacksmiths. The labor positions that the South African American had was such as to build fortifications.

The railroads were the most efficient and cost-effective mode of transportation. The expansion of the railroads gave positive impact on other industries such as reduce transportation time, production costs and created more market. Some of the railroads are still used until today with the same purpose.
As the railroad helped to reduce cost and transportation time and create more market, the demands on products increased. This created job opportunity. The poor people in the rural area migrated to big cities or urban area to change their life fate and more immigrants flocked into the country to these regions. This created cities with new society fabric.
As the industry expanded more companies started to monopoly the market. The government and the economists see this as unhealthy. As a result, the government intervened the markets by passing laws to prevent monopoly such as the Interstate Commerce Act and Sherman Anti-Trust Act. These interventions were applied for a long time and this technique is still use until today.
