I chose to work at a location called Royal Springs Healthcare and Rehabilitation, in the activity department. The director of activities department is Ms. Dormisha Goodrich. This rehabilitation center includes acute rehabilitation, geriatrics, and long-term care. My status as a volunteer at this location is not related to any hierarchical position. This experience as a volunteer is new to me in this position. Along with the other staff in the activity department, I support the physical and mental activities of the residents. I was also able to support the staff who works in this department by easing their workload. The type of work I do at this rehabilitation center takes me out of my comfort zone of being a charge nurse in a fast paced unit

I am very thankful I was able to spend my holiday breaks gaining clinical…

By volunteering over sixteen hours at MacGregor Downs Health and Rehabilitation Center I have developed numerous strong bonds with various residents and now view old age in a more positive light. My visitation there covered a variety of tasks such as: one on one visits, decorating, knitting and participating in the veteran’s ceremony. Having the absolute pleasure of interacting with this center’s residents has been both delightful and informative. It is through these interactions that I no longer fear entering old age later in life. Nonetheless, the facility could benefit from small changes to its current operations.…

Today’s goal was to introduce me to the site, the people that work in my department, the resources available to workers, and current projects. My volunteer supervisor, Geraldine Baptist, showed me around the hospital, specifically where I would normally sign in and sign out, the cafeteria, and the Occupational/Physical therapy outpatient department. Upon arrival at the OT/PT department, Ms. Baptist introduced me to the front desk secretary, Mauracell, a sweet, openhearted young lady. Mauracell warm welcoming made me extremely comfortable, and all anxiety was put to ease. Mauracell showed me around the office and work center, then introduced me to each person present and gave me a description of what types of things they work on.…

One good indicator is the strength of the countries welfare state or the level of GDP such countries. However the authors Pat Armstrong, Hugh Armstrong and Tamara Daly wrote an article, “The thin blue line: Long-term care as an indicator of equity in welfare states” which argues a good indicator of equity and fairness in a society can be measured by the level of states commitment in long-term residential care with the emphasis on elderly care. Canada’s demographics are changing. The baby-boomer generation is getting older, and the senior age group of the population ages 65 and older outnumber the youth demographic (fourteen years and younger). This is according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (2011). The Institute also states that the senior’s population requires the most healthcare and they also require the most funding due to the frequency of visits to hospitals and clinics (Canadian Institute for Health Information, 2011, p.9). It has been predicted that as the population ages there will be issues with the financial capabilities of the already struggling health care system (“Is Our Health Care System Underfunded?”, 1983), and due to the financial struggles, the health care workers will be affected, which then…
