Long Term Care/Nursing Homes

The health care setting for this research project is long term care / nursing homes. The health care team in the long term care setting provides a range of services and support that one may need to meet their personal care needs, such as Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL). ADLs are bathing, dressing, using the toilet, transferring (to and from bed or chair), caring for incontinence, and eating. While IADLs are housework, managing money, taking medication, preparing and cleaning up after meals, shopping for groceries, using the telephone or other communication devices, caring for pets, and responding to emergency alerts such as fire alarm (www.longtermcare.gov).

Over the years, the nursing home quality and indicators have been utilized to measure nursing homes quality. In the article, “What is Nursing Homes Quality and How is it Measured?” the authors, Castle and Ferguson (2010), looked at steps that were required to address the future of improving quality of care nursing homes by providing a quarterly report card, only pay for well documented performances, marketing incentives, and policy created in the certification process. At this time nursing homes quality indicator are discussed in the Facility Quality Indicator Profile Report, Nursing Homes comparison report, and on the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Quality Measure Report (Castle, Ferguson, 2010).
