The care planning meeting revolved around an 11 year old named, Katy, who was/is subject to care order. The rules around contact with Katy had been made very explicit to Katy’s mother and her Aunt, at the time of the care order being made. However upon receiving the case I learned that Katy had been having unsupervised contact with both her mother and her Aunt, as a result of a lack of adherence to the care order by Katy’s foster carers. As a result Katy had been moved from her previous foster carers to new residential home. Unfortunately Katy’s move from her foster carers to her new residential home was not perfect and may have been a cause for anxiety for Katy due to the uncertainty of her…

During my employment at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Boston I was able to work with a graduate of MCPHS, Kaiming (Kyle) Chiang, MPAS, PA-C. His knowledge and comprehension of his role as well as his eagerness to always do more inspired me. Kyle’s professionalism and confidence led him to be a favorite among several patients; he was able to diagnose with confidence; and was able to communicate with the patients in a way that they would be able to understand. Kyle was always an advocate for MCPHS and as I continued to work with him I was able to see, not only his passion, but the knowledge he gleaned from his time at MCPHS. I knew that MCPHS was not only a school that prepared their students well for the workplace, but also teaches them in a manner where patient education and…

Donna, the program that you developed sounds like a great model that could be used by other nursing units in both long term and acute care settings, and I applaud your efforts. All too often, and for reasons I do not understand, nurses do tend to eat their own. My employer does have similar programs for nurses and nursing assistant staff. We also provide for a day of job shadowing to allow applicants the time and experience to understand what their role will be on each unit of the acute care hospital before they accept the position. Tilden et al., 2012 also link all levels of nursing staff turnover rates in long term care facilities to the quality of end-of-life care provided by the facility.…
