These things did worry me, because a year before we had left Houston my grandmother had moved from her spacious suburban abode to a small condo. It wasn’t that small nonetheless when you’re housing five plus people, it’s small. The reason for me being worried about school was because as a much younger child,

It felt sort of like in the book when Jeannette says, “We moved around like nomads” (Walls 19). I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and my family moved to Zanesville, Ohio when I was about nine months old. That move was hardly a tragic experience for me seeing as I don’t remember it, so I don’t think it really counts. I lived in Zanesville until I was almost nine years old. This was the only place I had ever known, and when my parents said that we were moving, I was in complete disbelief.…

The alpine white door opened and my brother picked me up into the air and said "We're moving!" I looked at him confused thinking about "Where are we go" or " Why are we leaving?" I’ve had three big moves in my life that had been hard for me, but not as much as this recent big move to San Antonio. Education has always been a part of my life. Long before my first day of kindergarten, my family’s love of learning has heavily influenced me. My maternal grandfather told me stories of people in places long ago with the same excitement and joy when I was five as he did when I was fifteen. I savor every moment I spend in my Uncle’s living room, their cozy furniture and reading lamps a mere practicality, while the books lining every shelf stole the spotlight. At nearly every stage in my elementary schooling, my mom inspired me to persevere and fought alongside me.…

At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…

With me being an only child, grandchild, and great grandchild, I was the only kid with five adults in a minivan. Why my parents thought that this was a good idea is still beyond my imagination.…
