Those who are securely attached tend to be able to regulate their emotions and have positive views of themselves and their partner. This allows them the comfort in seeking out their partner. Those who are dismissing-avoidant tend to have a positive view of themselves, but a negative view of their partner. Then, those who are fearful-avoidant fear rejection and tend to have a negative view of themselves as well as their partner. This study wanted to see whether different patterns of attachment styles and maintenance behaviors would lead to different kinds of stress in geographically close relationships than in long distance relationships. They hypothesized that those who had secure attachment would be able to use maintenance behaviors better than those with avoidant styles. They found that those who were securely attached were able to manage conflict better than those who were avoidant. This could be due to the idea that they are more confident in themselves as well as in their partners. These attachment styles had been related to the quality of relationships, but weren’t linked to the effect that they have on long distance relationships. Additionally, Roberts and Pistole (2009) used attachment styles to explain satisfaction in relationships. They hypothesized that low avoidance and high anxiety provide satisfaction in long distance relationships. They found …show more content…
Some of which include commitment, satisfaction, communication, and attachment styles. This study was created to further examine how attachment styles fit in with the success of a relationship. To determine this variable, participants took part in a survey that first asked whether or not they were in a long distance relationship. These questions also included their proximity and how long they were in the relationship. Then they were asked questions pertaining to what their attachment style was. In a previous study (Pistole, Roberts, & Mosko, 2010) it was found that secure attachment leads to being more available to their partner. Secure attachment was also linked to having better maintenance behaviors, which lead to more positivity (Pistole, Roberts, & Chapman, 2010). These previous studies suggest that certain attachment styles predict better outcomes. It was hypothesized that those who have a more secure attachment style would have a higher chance of a successful long distance
