Alcohol and Its Effects

Alcohol is linked to 75,000 deaths in the US every year. It can be located in many homes across the U.S and sold in a variety of stores. The drug effects people’s social, mental, and physical health. Although perceived as harmless by teenagers and adults, alcohol is a very dangerous drug. Alcohol has many effects both long and short term. The long-term effects include Cirrhosis, a disease that causes liver failure, which can cause you to die. It also causes dementia, which leads to memory loss and the increase of brain shrinkage. One of the main reasons people become addicted to alcohol is due to the reason it creates depression and that they create this self-belief that the alcohol

It causes distress to see a loved one go through such a self-destructive phase of their life. Especially when the drinker denies he or she has a problem and refuses to seek help. Alcohol affects the drinker socially in that it affects the way they pick friends. Research shows that adults and teens in college choose their friends based on their drinking preferences, especially alcoholics. They prefer people like them to be around so that it creates an environment where drinking bounteous amounts of alcohol is ok. The friendships support the alcohol addiction and further more make it much worse. There are however worse social risks. Woman, especially young women, acquire special risks in drinking groups and parties. In todays society a woman intoxicated to some men is by definition sexually available. These are where terms such as “date rape” come from. They are unwanted sexual interactions and males can be subject to jail time for rape even if he thought the girl gave her consent. With the many social problems we cant forget how it all starts and spreads. From personal experience it spreads through peer pressure. It can spread from friend to friend, brother to brother, sister to sister. It’s perceived and cool and since everyone is drinking it makes it ok. Parents can also help by buying the alcohol and hosting the party. They believe that they’re making the environment safe by not allowing teens to drive, but they fail to realize that there drinking alcohol. It defeats the whole purpose, because it’s the drug that is doing the real damage. Every day in America 28 people die as a result of drunk driving. Not only that, but every 90 seconds someone is injured by a drunk driver. Alcohol not only affects the drinker, but also the people around
