Loneness In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

As you look at these three characters they all faced some type of loneness throughout the story. Candy had his dog in the beginning of the novel but because Carlson wanted him dead as well the other people on the farm, he agreed with them and allowed his dog to be killed. After his dog was killed, Candy persona changed, he became depressed because he had this dog since it was a puppy and now he has no one. Slim offered him a new puppy but I think Candy wasn’t ready to move on. Crooks was lonely because the color of his skin and he had to sleep in the barn with the other animals. He doesn’t want anyone coming into his room but when Lennie comes in, at first he was being very hostile to him and told to get out. But when he realized that Lennie was a pleasant guy he allowed him to stay. Curley’s wife wanted attention and hated to be alone. She first display this when she walks into Crooks’ room. Crooks’ wanted her out of his room but she refused because Curley and other co-workers were out of town. Curley’s wife then again returns to the barn when Lennie was alone with the puppies. She wanted Lennie to talk to her but he refused because George told him not to talk her. Curley’s wife was being desperate and was trying to make Lennie to talk to her. Soon as she found out that Lennie likes to pet soft things, she then offers him to pet her hair because it was soft. This ended up leading to her death. …show more content…
Candy felt loneness because he lost his dog, Crooks was alone because of his racial status, and Curley’s wife felt loneness because she sought for interaction but no wanted to interact with her. These three characters displayed loneness but they couldn’t fill this void with anything because I think they had a tough time interacting and relating with other characters throughout the
