Loneliness In Robert Frost's Acquainted With The Night

The 1920s, a time for new innovations and was the rise of popular culture. People were expressing themselves more freely and enjoying life. During the year 1928, Robert Frost wrote a poem titled, “Acquainted with the Night.” From the title we can guess that Frost enjoyed partaking in the festivities of The Roaring Twenties. Maybe he enjoyed going out to socialize with a drink in hand, but unfortunately that is far from the truth. “Acquainted with the Night” is a work that depicts Robert Frost’s depression and loneliness. Beginning with the title, we can tell immediately that this poem is set in darkness. Whether the lack of light is comforting we do not know, but whoever the speaker is will be immersed in it. When you are acquainted with someone you probably know their name but not much about their personal life. It could be someone you see often and are cordial with but it doesn’t go beyond your small chat. Therefore, from the name of the poem someone, or something, is familiar with darkness. Throughout Frost’s poem the language is very concrete and easy to understand. “I” is repeated quite a bit letting us know that there is only one speaker and that this poem is about them. “Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right (line 13).” Even if he took his walk during the day he’d still feel the same. No one would pay attention to him nor understand what he was going through. The night is more comforting for him because he doesn’t have to explain himself to anyone and it’s easier to hide. The very last line says a lot about the poem because it ends with a question. “I have been one acquainted with the night (line 14).” The words “I have” make it unclear to whether the speaker gets over these obstacles of depression or if it’s still an ongoing
