Lonely Company Author Kim Culbert communicated “People think being alone makes you lonely, but I don’t think that’s true. Being surrounded by the wrong people is the loneliest thing in the world” (Mind Your Wings). The terms “alone” and “lonely” are rather differential in meaning. Alone is defined as being “separate, apart, or isolated from others” (Dictionary.com) On the other hand, lonely is defined as “destitute of sympathetic or friendly companionship, intercourse,support, etc” (Dictionary.com). Difference in definition does not keep the two concepts from intertwining, and certainly does not keep people from inadvertently mistaking one for the other. It seemed as though she is lonely due to her disappointing marriage with Curley. One of the reasons for her marriage’s failure to satisfy was simply that she did not like Curley and the type of man he was. While speaking with one of the guys on the ranch, she confessed ‘“I don’t like Curley. He ain’t a nice fella”’ (Steinbeck 88). She also expressed her frustration with him by announcing ‘“Sometimes I’d like to bust him up myself”’ (Steinbeck 87). She even declared her displeasure living with him when she said that Curley ‘“spend all his time sayin’ what he’s gonna do to guys he don’t like, and he don’t like nobody. Think I’m gonna stay in that house and listen how Curley’s gonna lead with the left twict, and then bring the ol’ right cross?”’ (Steinbeck 78). It was apparent that Curley’s wife was displeased with the conversations and company her husband provided her with. Her persistent flirting and lingering around Lennie even though he expressed and warned her of the fact that she should not be there, and that he should not be talking with her, put her in a conflicting and deadly situation. Despite holding the knowledge of how strong Lennie can be, even if he does not mean to be, Curley’s wife “took Lennie’s hand and put it on her head” (Steinbeck 92) to feel how soft her hair was. Her persistence for physical contact gave Lennie a strong advantage over Curley’s wife.
