Mother Teresa once said, "Loneliness is a man's worst poverty." Without friends and companions, people begin to suffer from loneliness and solitude . Loneliness is an inevitable fact of life and cannot be avoided, as shown through some of the characters in John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. Lennie was isolated for being mentally handicapped, Candy was isolated for being old and disabled, Crooks was isolated for being black. Loneliness is essential in this book because it determines the outcome for the characters.
Crooks was isolated for being a black man. He loves himself because the other men in the ranch don't like him very well. He doesn't participate in any of the social activities and he's desperate to talk someone. For example when lennie went into Crooks bunk, Crooks says to lennie “A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long's he with you. I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an he gets sick" (Steinbeck p 72-73). That shows Crooks desperately needs a friend to talk to and he is at the point where he is becoming emotionally sick of it. Curlys wife is the only woman on the ranch and no one will talk to her, including her husband. Her sexuality isolates her from the other characters. She's is irritated with everyone because no one would talk to her. And when She tries to talk to Curly, he gets mad at her. For example in the story, she says “I get lonely, you can talk to people but i can't talk to anybody but curly. Else he gets mad” (steinbeck p 87). In the 1930ś people would discriminate against women and think less of them. As if they weren't smart, or capable of doing things. But when men lost their jobs, so some women stood up. According to the 1930 census, 24% in the country, women were gainfully employed. Curley's wife was isolated for being a woman.
