Comotion arises in the barn, as a woman struggles to get free. She twist and turns, then “SNAP,” everything stops as she lies on the floor dead, as a consequence of her trying to clear up her only flaw, her loneliness. John Steinbeck’s acclaimed novel, Of Mice and Men, centralised on the idea of friendship and having a someone, anyone, to get through the rough times of the Great Depression. The two main characters of Lennie and George aren’t the ones who are lonely but meet others who experience loneliness to the fullest extent and do absolutely anything to get out of it. Through the characters of his book John Steinbeck portrays loneliness as a device that persuades people to seek attention resulting in them doing things they otherwise would never do.

Candy is a swamper on the farm that Lennie and George work at, he’s usually seen with his old dog that goes everywhere with him. The two were inseparable, until Candy is convinced by the other workers that the dog just isn’t good anymore and he gives his beloved dog up to be shot. After this tragic moment Candy spirals into a depression and experiences loneliness in full affect, until he overhears Lennie and George’s dream to own their own land and gives up nearly everything he has just to get rid of his crippling loneliness. Candy explains,“S’pose I went in with you guys. That’s three hundred an’ fifty bucks I’d put in”(59). Three hundred fifty dollars was literally everything Candy had left that was worth any value, and Candy was willing to give it all up just to join these two men who he barely knew on a dream that was just a dream. Candy was so desperate enough to give everything he had and was willing to give these two strangers money in his will. Candy was alone in the world and his only option to get out was to leave all he head in people he didn’t even
