Loneliness In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Loneliness,isolation,friendship, and a dream are perfect to make the award winning novel, John Steinbeck's, Of Mice and Men.Throughout the novel the author portrays friendship like between George and Lennie, Candy and his dog, and Slim and George. Although there are friendships there are also downfalls. Throughout the novel most of the characters feel lonely, and isolated, like Crooks, Candy, and Curley’s wife. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence revealing this isolation and loneliness among these characters. Crooks, a colored stable boy, is very isolated from the other men on the ranch, because the color of his skin. He’s also very lonely, he’s not mean, he just has no one to talk to or to tell his troubles to because he is in the barn by himself constantly. Page 72 “I guy needs somebody-to be near him. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long he’s with you.” This is telling the reader how he is very lonely and in need of somebody, to talk to, to be near,anything as long as they’re there. Page 73 “I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an’ he gets sick.” As shown in the text there is an overwhelming amount to show how Crooks is isolated and lonely, in need of a friend. …show more content…
Candy has a very old dog that smells awful, and Candy doesn’t know what to do. Carlson complains about how bad he smells and he is suffering so they pure pressure him into putting his dog down. Page 48 “Candy did not answer silence fell over the room.” This event occurs after they say they are going to kill Candy’s dog, and Slim ask if Candy wants one of his pups. “He will not feel it Candy. Candy did not move or answer him. Throughout this story Candy becomes lonely without his dog, and stays isolated because of what they did to his
