Loneliness In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Loneliness is one of the themes in the novel Of Mice and Men. This feeling of isolation is felt by many of the characters in the novel. Curley’s wife, Crooks, and Candy all lead lonely lives on the ranch. Curley’s wife is one of the loneliest people on the ranch because she is the only female on the ranch also because Curley gets made at her for talking to other men also Curley threatens the other men if they talk to her. When she goes around trying to talk to the other men they get mad at her because if they get caught talking to her they will have to deal with Curley. I think that if there was another women on the ranch Curley’s wife wouldn’t have been so lonely. When Curley’s wife went into the barn when Lennie was there she was just looking for a friend to talk to. Chapter 5, Page 90 Curley’s wife says to
Lennie “But you’re a kinda nice fella.” …show more content…
As the book went one it showed how he wasn’t horrible mean to Lennie. I think that a lot of the men made friends with each other because they stayed in the bunk house together where as Crooks wasn’t allowed to he had to sleep in the barn. When Crooks was telling Candy what he could do on the farm it sounded like he was trying to make friends. I think that candy tries to make friends but he doesn’t know how to very well. Chapter 4, Page 83 Crooks says to Candy “Member what I said about hoein’ and doin’ odd jobs?” To which Candy responds “Yeah, I remember.” Then Crooks says “ Well, jus’ forget it, I didn’ mean it.” Jus’ foolin’ I wouldn’ want to go to no place like
