Companionship and loneliness can affect anyone’s life to be better or worse. A great example of how companionship and loneliness are to different people is John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men novella. The characters in this story live in a time where companionship is rare but envied. The main characters, George and Lennie, are the two new workers on a ranch and they have to try not to lose their jobs once again because of Lennie’s mistakes. Throughout the novella, loneliness is shown again and again between characters like Crooks and Curley’s Wife. But also companionship like Candy and with George and Lennie. The importance of loneliness and companionship is presented as two of the themes in Of Mice and Men within a majority of the characters.

Some examples of this in Of Mice and Men are when George tells Lennie about ranch workers, “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place. They come to the ranch an’ work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake and the first thing you know they’re poundin’ their tail on some other ranch. They ain’t got nothing to look ahead to.” and when Slim says “Ain’t many guys travel around together...I don’t know why. Maybe ever’body in the world is scared of each other…” Also, when Crooks and Lennie are alone in Crook’s room, he talks about how nice it must be for George to have someone to talk to even if they don’t understand or remember and how different that is from his life. A Fourth example is how Curley’s wife constantly tries to get the ranch workers’ attention because no one ever talks to her and she just wants a friend since she doesn’t actually like Curley. Lastly, “Hardly none of the guys ever travel together… never seem to give a [dang] about nobody.” This feeling of loneliness is in every one of the characters in different ways just as it is for anyone in reality. If all those lonely people just tried to make friends rather than being afraid of one another, things would be better for all of them. But the only way to subdue loneliness is with it’s opposite,
