Shaping The Essay According to Merriam Webster, “loneliness is when your mind is causing sad feelings that come from being apart from other people.” In John Steinbecks book, Of Mice and Men, the companions are forced by loneliness to be together. George and Lennie are together because of Lennie’s Aunt dying, so George made a promise to stay with Lennie so he is not lonely. Curley and his wife are together due to his wife, but she still suffers from Loneliness. John Steinbeck conveys the symbols of Loneliness and Companships through his characters, George, Lennie, Curley, and Curley’s wife, by showing developing relationships in his book. To begin, the story starts with two main characters, Lennie and George.We learn that George was forced in a way to be with Lennie. “When his Aunt Clara died, Lennie just came along with me out workin.” (Steinbeck 39) George is a lot smarter then Lennie. They wouldn’t necesssarily be friends if they had other choices. George doesn’t leave Lennie probably because he fears loneliness. For these two characters, being in a companionship that is weird, is better than not having one at all.

For instance, Curley’s wife tells Lennie, “I never get to talk to nobody. I get awfully lonely.” (Steinbeck 84) When she said this she was showing her loneliness and also I noticed that she is craving a friendship. She needed someone to talk to. We learn towards the end of the book that Curley’s wife marries Curley only to make something of herself. She realized this was a deadend and this shows her acceptance of failure, and she is trying to escape of loneliness. According to Curley’s wife, she says, “I can’t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How’d you like not to talk to anybody.” (Steinbeck 83) This shows that she is forced onto loneliness because her choices were taken
