Personal Narrative-The Importance Of Loneliness In Life

As a young, single man living with his mother, who sits in his room on most days, whose biggest responsibility is waking up, and who has become accustomed to silence, I think I know a thing or two about loneliness. I’ve spent a large portion of my time mulling over the thought of loneliness, and how life should be spent with others. My mind is typically occupied by love and tends to live in the future. In the end, all I feel is a longing for a connection between days. However, it is in these moments between days where I find myself most dejected, most alone. Loneliness is the ever-creeping fear of never finding the one. I often lie awake at night pondering the infinite possibilities in life, and it terrifies me to think that there are some versions of my life where I will not find anyone. It is a crippling concept of fear that can only be cured with sleep until tomorrow. The still air in my room allows for the worst sound imaginable to pervade space: the sound of one heart aching. In this sound, my mind wanders through the darkest parts of my head and drudges up only the worst of the memories. To quote La Dispute’s “five,” “there is a loneliness is this world so great that you can see it in the slow movement of the hands of a clock.” Love is a fleeting emotion that spends its time between minutes, evading us in our times of need. In these moments, I find loneliness, and I cannot escape it. One moment, I am content with life and whatever it may bring, and in the next, I am impaled by the sudden realization of my sole being. It leaves a wound that only time can mend, but that time can never arrive soon enough.
