Loneliness And Isolating In Matchbox Twenty's Song 'Unwell'

Improved Essays
“Unwell” by Matchbox Twenty uses an example of feeling lonely and isolating. Holden's reaction to feeling surrounded by phonies is to isolate himself from others. In the book he says “One of the biggest reasons I left Elkton Hills was because I was surrounded by phonies. That's all. They were coming in the goddam window.” (Salinger 13) Holden does not like people who are concerned with the way they are to other people and feels these people are phonies and that he can not surround himself with these type of people More and more as he breaks down though the book he loses touch with his emotions and becomes more and more lonely.. In the song “Unwell” by Matchbox Twenty says “All Day staring at the ceiling/ Making friends with The Furher.”

The subjects in both the song “Blue” by Marina and the Diamonds and Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye are similar in that they both share feeling of insecurity and being alone. Holden’s constant urge to dial or pay for company demonstrate his reliance on others for his insecurities and alienation . His strong reliance on others is because to fully comprehend himself and to gain solutions to his moral questionings, Holden has to accept his insecurities while being isolated. In “Blue”, Marina sings about having low self-esteem thus her dependence on others for moral solutions: “Gimme love, gimme dreams, gimme a good self esteem Gimme good and pure.” Similarly to the conversation Holden had with Sally at the roller rink, where she gives Holden reasons…

I felt like jumping out the window. I probably would 've done it, too, if I 'd been sure somebody 'd cover me up as soon as I landed” (Salinger 104). The thought of suicide also occurs when he thinks, “I felt so lonesome, all of a sudden. I almost wished I was dead” (Salinger 48). These frequent thoughts of suicide running through Holden’s mind, are a clear representation of depression in his life.…

Some themes that “I am a Rock” and Catcher in the Rye share are alienation as a form of self-protection and the hurtful ways of society. In Catcher in the Rye, Holden throughout the book, isolates/alienates himself from other people as a form of self-protection. An example would be how at the beginning of the book, instead of going to the football game that the entire school was attending, Holden decided to to be by himself at the top of a hill, listening to all of the yelling coming from the game. In “I am a Rock”, Simon says, “I am alone gazing from my window to the streets below on a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow”. This quote is saying that he feels left out and wants to be left to himself.…

Since the beginning of the book you could tell that Holden was an overall sad person. He always separated himself. “I was standing way up on Thomsen Hill, instead of down at the game” (Salinger 3) while everyone else is in the game he's isolated, and watching people instead of connecting with them. It wasn't only Holden, who furthered himself from everyone. “The whole team ostracized me the whole way back.…

“Pray that your loneliness may spur you into finding something to live for, great enough to die for” -Dag Hammarskjold. This quote is saying that in light of loneliness maybe it will bring along something great. I feel this quote relates to Holden because his loneliness brought him to many realizations about his life and his future. Many people in the world deal with issues of loneliness, fitting in and growing up. In J.D. Salinger’s story “The Catcher in the Rye”, Holden deals with many issues that still relate to teenagers and people today.…

This is especially true when he mentions how he wants to be the Catcher in the Rye, where he will “have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff-I mean they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them,” (173) therefore preventing them from falling off of the cliff. While his proposal would be preposterous, Salinger instead uses Holden’s interpretation of the poem to change the message of the poem from not spreading rumors and gossip to preventing a child from losing his/her innocence when they go over the cliff because of the child not seeing the edge of the cliff. He also sees Phoebe and wants to prevent what happens to him from happening to her by attempting to prevent her from losing her innocence. Salinger shows Holden’s insecurities through Holden’s interpretation of the poem in order to show how Holden becomes…

Back then, people did not publicly discuss their personal problems and talked to no one about them. Even Holden didn’t “ever tell anybody anything,” including his depressed and lonesome feelings (Salinger 277). He would mistrust grownups and experiment through other paths to understand the adult world he is entering. Today, however, there is awareness about these mental issues and problems -- people can go to counselors, doctors, psychiatrists, support groups, etc. and talk to them in order to figure out a solution. That way, Holden’s mental disorder and depressed state-of-mind can slowly disappear and create a whole new joyful person.…

Physical Symptoms: Isolating Himself from Society: Depressed people often isolate themselves because they do not want to face the strain of social contact. “I was standing way the hell up on top of Thomsen Hill, right next to this crazy cannon that was in the Revolutionary War and all. You could see the whole field from there...practically the whole school except me was there” (Salinger 2) In this quote Holden is isolating himself from everyone because he does not want to deal with everyone, who he thinks are fake.…

(Salinger 100) In fact, he uses the word about fifty times to describe either himself or experiences that make him feel this way. Another example that clues the reader in about Holden’s psyche is the amount of guilt that he carries around daily. He’s constantly putting himself down and saying how he does not deserve some of the things that he gets. An example of this is the pair of ice skates his mother gifted him. “One thing about packing depressed me a little.…
