If no breakthroughs are made in dealing with this issue then, based on past trends, these lone wolf terrorist attacks will only continue to happen with varying degrees of damage and casualties while increasing in frequency. Even if more people decide to take up more safety and security measures lone wolves will either be able to find the weakness in the defenses or will instead focus on attacking areas with low chance of relitation. Even if the government is able to overthrow a well known terrorist organization like ISIS, as long as their ideals, beliefs, and message continues to spread lone wolves will remain an issue.
The main problem that should be avoided is overreacting to these attacks as recklessly retaliating may only serve to cause unnecessary strife in the future. The number of lone wolf cases have been growing since the 1950s which used to be less than 10 cases per decade but now since 2010 has climbed over 30 cases within the decade. It is believed that as long as the American government and its various law enforcers remain almost ineffective in dealing with these threats, the number of lone wolf cases will only continue to increase in frequency. There many vulnerabilities in our system that needs to be addressed if the government hopes to make an impact against them like a lack of funds, manpower, training, and communication between agencies to allow for better intelligence sharing. Although many lone wolf attacks are notorious for causing a political uproar in how we address and prevent terrorism, we must learn from our mistakes and perhaps we can one day see the end to this unnecessary
