While watching Lone Survivor, I saw how Peter Berg implemented many film elements creating a dynamic movie. In this war epic, four Navy SEALs are caught in a terrible situation while fighting in the war on terror with bleak chances of survival. As the clip progressed I saw the elements that are worth breaking down for education on the film process. In this paper, I will breakdown the first sequence of Lone Survivor containing three scenes into the visual aspects that make this movie unique.
As opening clip of the movie progresses, it is obvious that the visual approach is in a deductive nature. Starting off with an establishing shot of the Middle East and slowly moving in each shot revealing what is happening. With this deductive approach the

The scene opens with an establishing shot, wide shot, of the Middle East then quickly moves into a mixture of medium shots and close ups inside the military chopper. The wide shot of the Middle East gives the viewers the overall sense of what is happening. The medium and close ups allow for more detail of what is happening with Luttrell. There are a few other points of views throughout the sequence one during the chopper ride where we see through the eyes of Luttrell using a handheld cam moving around showing how disoriented he was. When the medics were rushing him to the ward we see an over the shoulder shot showing how the medics were making running in an urgent pace to save his life. Most of the motion comes from action, primary, as the medics are rushing around trying to save the life of Luttrell. There is some secondary motion as the camera is moving around using a handheld showing an actual point of view of the situation putting the audience in place of the medics. Through these cameras approaches Lone Survivor has a unique opening that is full of intensity while having plenty of emotional attachment to

The scene begins with a view of a tunnel, which is kicked open by a group of shouting men and a man taken out. The individual is the former Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi, who is then shot dead. The scene has a dramatic element to it, with some young men were seen making a dash towards the stage and shouts rent the air, as the former President is portrayed in an open, graphic state. The shot has slowly rising orchestral music in the background, which threatens to be drowned by the gunshots and shouting that is going on, and the cumulative effect is the attainment of a sense of heightening drama and chaos. A piercing scream from women is heard as the scene unfolds, which is an ominous sound of a slow, quiet tune.…

An audience’s reaction stems from the choices made in medium and message; the importance of time is not lost as the director uses tools to enhance their themes. Split screens and multi-image shots have long been used to show the relationship between time and space. Films must purposefully select elements to add credibility to their stories to ensure the viewership will understand the message as it is intended. The use of cross-cutting from Jamal’s point of view to Salim’s and even Latika’s creates anticipation for the audience as to what is going to happen. Boyle is purposefully showing the shots of Latika running towards the phone and Salim layering money in the bath tub to create suspense for the audience as the figure out what will happen, and how each scene pieces into the end game of the movie. One of the reasons that I would chose a victim is because of my past. I grew up in an abusive home and so I was abused by my parents on a regular basis. I know that coming from that state I am a victim and that I survived my abuse…

A Final Thought Everyone is affected by rules. As children we are taught to follow them, as teenagers we are persuaded to break them, and as adults we are forced to establish them, but without rules disorder and chaos would dominate our society. Rules are made and enforced for a reason, to prevent an outbreak of criminal behavior and hold people to a moral and ethical standard. In my essay, “Stranded” I argue the importance of rules to regulate genetic editing on human embryos and evaluate the social crisis that is a product of this innovative treatment.…
