Lomustine is also known as CCNU, which stands for cis-chlorethyl- nitrosourea. It is a chemotherapy drug that is normally taken once every 6 weeks for 6 cycles or according to the doctor’s advice. This is to be taken orally with water on an empty stomach. Lomustine can be used individually or in combination with procarbazine and vincristine for gliomas. This combined treatment is called PCV.
Lomustine is an alkylating agent and it works by inhibiting DNA replication as the alkyl group binds to the DNA. This then inhibits the growth of the cancer cells. Then, the P-450 system in the liver metabolises this and it is then passed as urine. The recommended dose for lomustine is 130mg per m2. . Lomustine comes in 10mg, 40mg and 100mg strengths.
