Only a few people in the world are considered free and literate, the rest are subjected to the authoritarian leaderships of their oppressors, but how can they gain their freedom? We have gained freedom as a birthright , etched in stone and never to be tampered with, but to gain that our ancestors had to declare theirs, to establish our self-governance. The act of demanding what rightfully belongs to us is the only way we can be ushered to the beacon of sovereignty and independence. Martin Luther King Jr. in his speech “I have a dream” , To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and “Reading Lolita in Tehran” by Azar Nafisi are just a few examples in which the protagonists or major character are oppressed by society. Miss Maudie says after the trial says “The handful of people believe that fareplay isn't marked white only”(page 261 To Kill a Mockingbird). Miss Maudie shows us that most white people in the town have turned a blind eye to the black community. If it weren't for the outcry of justice that was put out even the handful of people wouldn't have known what injustices the black community face. Fittingly, when Mr.Cunningham was part of a Lynch mob “ He wanted to hurt [Atticus]...It took an 8 year old girl to talk sense into him”(page 179, To kill a Mockingbird). Mr.Cunningham mindlessly followed a mob without a clue of the injustice and crime he was committing. Scout was able to form in his mind the necessity for justice for Negroes, she made sure that the point was heard, Scout made sure Mr.Cunningham understood the demands and cry of equity and made him realize his mistake. Throughout “To Kill a Mockingbird” a strong recurring theme is Justice and judgment. To illustrate this, when Atticus is telling scout why he is defending the negro man scout asks him “You mean if you didn't defend that man, Jem and me wouldn't have to mind you anymore” (Lee,86). This illustrates Atticus teachings on Justice and Judgement to scout because if you believe in something even if others do not you wouldn’t be true to yourself, Atticus's point is that if he did not do the right thing he could no longer expect his kids to listen when he tells them to or sit in church because it wouldn't be true to the church either. It is through Atticus’s judgment that he has chosen to fight for justice for a man that many believe don't deserve…

“At any given moment, public opinion is a chaos of superstition, misinformation, and prejudice” (Gore Vidal). In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee suggests that innocent people are so often misunderstood. Growing up in the small southern town of Maycomb County, young Scout learns through her father, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view… until you climb into their skin and walk around in it.” (Harper Lee 30). Racism is, at first, bullying and discriminative on a basic level, Atticus says, “ In our courts all men are created equal” (Lee 233). Here Atticus is trying to talk to the jury’s inside humanity. He is trying to convince people with what is right and how they should be looking at this case. They should look at the evidence provided, the real hard evidence not circumstantial evidence to base such a crime on. In Maycoumb the townspeople do not put themselves in the black people’s shoes.…
