Lois Lowry's Number The Stars

Decent Essays
I believe that Lois Lowry named this Book “Number The Stars” because God knows all of his creations by name, including the Jews. And even though they were going through rough times,God was watching over them all the same. The name of the book speaks in volumes to me, it sets the meaning of the book in three simple words. What I personally believe the inner meaning of the title is simply don’t give up. And throughout the story that is exactly what the Jews did, they never gave up hope that the war would end, and it did. Annemarie showed perseverance as well, she never stopped protecting her friend Ellen. Annemarie did all she could to make sure that no matter what Ellen and her Family made it to Sweden, even if the means to doing so

Throughout all the chaos that ensued, the one distinction that hindered the Jewish people from freedom was their inexplicable silence and dignity. In desperation to escape and be liberated, the Jewish prisoners heavily outnumbered the German guards. As the young men were urging an attack against the guards the elders begged and pleaded that they refrained from attacking them. As an Elder muttered, “we mustn’t give up hope even now as the sword hangs over our heads. So taught our sages….”…

During the 1900s, the Holocaust was a horrific time to be alive. Jews were being distinguished by a major military organization known as the Schutzstaffel. Adolf Hitler and his men were separating Jewish families from each other by assassinating them and stealing the wealth they accumulated. But no one would soon believe that a survivor would have the abilities and the strength to publish and write such a memorable book that would soon inform the world about the Holocaust. Night, a novel produced by a first hand Jew named Eliezer Wiesel, puts audience members into a world that was filled with death, loss, and Jewish prisoners who were contemplating whether or not God truly did amazing things.…

The book “The Messiah: Revealed, Rejected, Received” by William Varner explains to us what a messiah is and why we even need a messiah.. The book shows that when the Jews wanted God to send them down someone they were not satisfied with what God had in store for them. Lastly we see who the messiah God sent is, and how that after most people walked away from the Lord, some were still choosing to follow. As this book goes into great detail addressing all those topics I just mentioned, the overall theme is showing us what a messiah is and what the importance of one is from the point of view of a believer, while still being aware of the Jews believed.…

Language is more than a method of purely transferring interpretation; it can also transfer emotion. Whereas voice involves cadence, body assertion, and even facial articulation, the words written on a page are compelled to demonstrate more than just what is being told through a series of other strategies and manners usually implanted in the writer’s voice. Both the memoirs I Have Lived a Thousand Years by Livia Bitton-Jackson, and Night by Elie Wiesel, transfer the nature of oppression through certain methods of voice, particularly syntax and tone.…

As Hamaoui translates from the memoir Night “The passage uses the poetry and language of faith to affirm a shattering of faith”(Hamaoui 128). The Jewish people struggling to survive the Holocaust are using faith and religion to keep themselves alive. Over time the Jews begin to question God’s willingness to stop the Holocaust. The loss of faith is hard for Elie to keep moving forward in the fight for freedom. Elie starts to believe God has left them to die, so they begin to abandon religion.…

The author, Eliezer Wiesel is an actual survivor of the Holocaust, and he endured the suffering of living in the Auschwitz labour camps.
