When examining the African American Civil Rights Movement from a historical perspective, historians and scholars have focused predominantly on the lives and influences of a few, celebrated characters. For example, early abolitionist advocates, such as Sojourner Truth, William Lloyd Garrison, and Frederick Douglass, and twentieth-century civil rights leaders Ida B. Wells, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King Jr. have received significant attention and justifiably achieved revered status among scholars and non-academics alike. However, few individuals beyond the narrow world of academia have heard of America’s first, southern, female abolitionists, Sarah and Angelina Grimké. The Grimké sisters, who belonged to the powerful planter aristocracy in…

Iron Jawed Angels After watching “Iron Jawed Angels” I gained more knowledge and a stronger sense of the realities that women had to go through to achieve their independence and gain place in a male dominated society. Up until the 19th century, women had the role as homemakers and were only allowed to duties within the home; they couldn’t go out into society. With developing political and industrial systems, women could use those skills as a voice in American government and society. “Dress up prejudice and call it politics” a quote in the movie Iron Jawed Angels which represents the struggle of the women’s suffrage movement.…

Jane cherished father died, and after six months attending medical college in Philadelphia, she had withdrawn herself in 1882 for reasons of illness, and she would never go back. A year of recovery she traveled, and then had two tours of Europe, but her travels did not make her happy. Later she would write of being caught in "the snare of preparation" which she said impeded young women from wealthy backgrounds, keeping them locked in a state of repeated preparation for life rather than allowing them to commence an actual career. Somewhat because of her involvements in Europe, is when she discovered her life's passion, and with her lifelong friend Ellen Gates Starr they founded Hull House in a run-down Chicago mansion on September 18, 1889.…

Alice Paul has not been completely forgotten by all means, but has been forgotten on a huge level. Very few people have learned about the struggles of Paul and her fellow suffragists. Paul is one of the lucky ones in my opinion, for there are hundreds of women’s names that we will never know. There are contributions that will forever be anonymous to the world.…

This achievement brought hopes to many women that their status would improve as a result of fighting in the war. However, national liberation did not bring women’s liberation. Many famous female veterans described the war as being “brief parenthesis of roles and status for women, brutally closed in 1962 by a patriarchal nationalist movement which removed them and denied them any role in the post-colonial project”. Women were expected to return back to their homes and perform domestic jobs again. As Djamila Amrane, a female veteran, states: “each woman was put back into square one”.…

Told in third person, the narrator illustrates the fears that consume Roselily as the preacher says the final words before the bride and groom are pronounced husband and wife. Generosity is a wonderful personality trait to have when it comes to human interaction and connection, but when suffering is a possible outcome, it brings into question whether generosity relieves suffering or is there suffering in generosity? Evans and Singer both exhibit an argument with being generous. However, Evans showed suffering in being generous while Singer saw generosity in relieving suffering. Wilson on the other hand, supports the work of Evans and challenges the work of Singer’s, in a psychological way, on free will in their depiction of generosity displayed through reasoning.…
