Logan Film Techniques

The first trailer for “Logan,” with Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” serving as the soundtrack, catapulted “Logan” up my list of most anticipated movies of the year. I was already looking forward to it, of course, but that trailer moved up it to my fourth most anticipated movie of the year. That’s a high bar to live up to, and “Logan” cleared it with plenty of room.
Set in the near future, this movie, the last X-Men film for both Hugh Jackman as the titular mutant and Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, follows the two as they attempt to hide out near the Mexican border. Their quiet, unassuming life is soon upended, however, with the arrival of Laura (Dafne Keen), a young mutant being pursued by henchman working for a villainous corporation. At Xavier’s urging, Logan and the aging Xavier, who has Alzheimer’s, set up to help Laura reach a safe haven at the other end of the country.

The directing here is exactly as it needs to be. The tone of “Logan” is gritty, realistic and dark. It’s not your typical superhero film. There’s no rousing action set pieces or laugh-filled scenes. This is a tough movie to watch and Mangold nails the tone for that.
The reason it’s such a rough watch is that Mangold, Frank and Green did an excellent job with the script. The characters here, two of whom we’ve come to know over almost 10 films, are thoroughly fleshed out and explored here. This is a character and story driven superhero film, a rare thing some might say, and it’s superbly executed.
The writers also get credit for this story, which Mangold received a credit for. It’s an extremely well told narrative. The film is tense and engaging throughout, but it’s also a brutal and intense film and the filmmakers succeed in telling the story with all those facets

Where as I normally end up arguing against why a film should be considered a horror film, this time I'm going other way and argue why Lightning Bug is a Horror film. As I stated in Horror, My Definition, a Horror film is a film that used dread and horror, while trying to evoke negative emotions. Lightning Bug does that for me, upon first viewing I wasn't that impressed and disregarded is horror elements. Instead focusing on how its a Coming of Age Drama. But after viewing the film never really settled and has passed through my mind on several occasions and when I reflect on the film it's dark and haunting undertones that remain.…

The actors, especially Pratt and Howard, do a good job portraying their characters, even if the characters themselves don't feel too realistic (hey, you came to watch a dinosaur movie). The story is especially linear and almost predictable, but that really doesn't stop…

To start off, I want to say that I loved this film. I never had an exact preconceived attitude towards this film other than hearing it was one to watch. Also, I absolutely adore Michael Cera and knowing what goofy characters he has played in the past helped me quickly accept and relate to the quirky characters we see in Juno. It is obvious that the explicit meaning of this film is the story of a teenage girl who gets pregnant.…

Director David Leitch (“John Wick”, “Atomic Blonde”) and writers Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Ryan Reynolds considerably decreased my enthusiasm about Deadpool with this discouraging second installment of the Marvel Comics franchise. In 2016, Tim Miller (his next move is a reformulated episode of Terminator with Schwarzenegger) was more efficient in his approach, causing a positive impact with his depiction of the subversive anti-hero and drawing a legion of fans, who rejoiced with the irreverence of the character. Insolent, defiant, often violent, and having a spiteful tongue, Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) is a disfigured yet physically indestructible mercenary whose body enjoys an extremely accelerated healing factor. After losing his beloved girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) in a sudden enemy attack, Wade tries to commit suicide by blowing himself up. In the course of his recovery, he befriends a mutant kid named Russell Collins/Firefist (New Zealander Julian Dennison), who is not so kind-hearted as he looks.…

WATCHMEN Adaptation Analysis The adaptation of the WATCHMEN graphic novel to a live action movie is overall an acceptable feat, because the director kept most of the main plot points. Although it was not able to go into as great of detail as the comic was able to portray. If you had not read the novel prior to watching the movie chances are you were lost most of the time.…

In Deadpool (2016), Ryan Reynolds plays a character called Wade Wilson, also known as the superhero Deadpool. The film follows the life of Deadpool and the many adversities he faces, such as finding out he has cancer, having to leave his girlfriend, and going through an extremely painful treatment. It also shows the entertaining parts of his life where he is a hit man, and his many drunken experiences. This superhero challenges the traditional hero narrative because although he helps many people throughout the film, he does not conform to the ideal of a hero. These differences between a usual superhero film and Deadpool make for an interesting twist in the cliché superhero story that viewers are so used to seeing because he doesn’t want fame…
