Set in the near future, this movie, the last X-Men film for both Hugh Jackman as the titular mutant and Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, follows the two as they attempt to hide out near the Mexican border. Their quiet, unassuming life is soon upended, however, with the arrival of Laura (Dafne Keen), a young mutant being pursued by henchman working for a villainous corporation. At Xavier’s urging, Logan and the aging Xavier, who has Alzheimer’s, set up to help Laura reach a safe haven at the other end of the country.

The directing here is exactly as it needs to be. The tone of “Logan” is gritty, realistic and dark. It’s not your typical superhero film. There’s no rousing action set pieces or laugh-filled scenes. This is a tough movie to watch and Mangold nails the tone for that.
The reason it’s such a rough watch is that Mangold, Frank and Green did an excellent job with the script. The characters here, two of whom we’ve come to know over almost 10 films, are thoroughly fleshed out and explored here. This is a character and story driven superhero film, a rare thing some might say, and it’s superbly executed.
The writers also get credit for this story, which Mangold received a credit for. It’s an extremely well told narrative. The film is tense and engaging throughout, but it’s also a brutal and intense film and the filmmakers succeed in telling the story with all those facets
