As a whole, I believe that people, at their core, are naturally moral and unselfish. Agreeing with Locke’s argument, humans are “social animals”, putting the health of the greater good over personal, selfish wants and desires. When humans see other humans in times of need and struggle, majority of us do something to help. It may be as simple as donating a dollar or the change from their wallet, but it is an effort to make someone's life better.
Think about the destruction throughout Texas that's happened these last few weeks due to a historic natural disaster, Hurricane Harvey. The people who weren’t effected from outside states, like California or New Mexico, could have blown it off, saying “The storm didn’t happen to us why should we help or waste our resources when we don’t even know those people”? In 2015, the country of Nepal experienced a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, killing 4,000 and injuring over 7,000 people. Within the week, the United States Government sent about 70 members of the International Development Disaster Assistance Response Team as well as 45 square tons of supplies. Additionally, the US government sent $9 million to add to the relief effort, adding up to $10 million dollars worth of aid sent to help a completely foreign country. Is Nepal in or even near the United States? Does the United States owe them anything? Does it effect the United States at all? If you said yes to any of these, guess again. I believe the United States aided Nepal out of kindness, wanting to better the world and wanting to help out anywhere needed.
