In Lisa Lewis’ article, “Why we still allow bullying to flourish is kids sports,” she discusses about kids being bullied by coaches. Some coaches today are abusing or yelling at their players for a mistake they have made. Lewis reports that most coaches are passionate about sports, but those who do bully the players may be unsatisfied about the development of every athlete. Lewis asserts that shouting or mistreating kids will result in a long-lasting feeling. Players may be fearful of speaking their mind because they do not want the coach to get pay back.…
As NBC was preparing to launch its new show they first realized they needed a name, and most importantly a host. NBC has decided to select Tony Dungy as their new host for their new sports talk show that focuses on the ins and outs of sports primarily focusing on basketball and football. The show will strive to be much like Real Sports and 60 minutes which have HBO and Showtime have found great success in. The reason for selecting Tony Dungy as the new host for the show is because he is a Super Bowl- winning head coach. Dungy is also recognized for who he is as a person, Sports Illustrated has said that he is “Football’s high priest, the oracle who passes judgment on all moral questions.”…
Response on Dave Barry’s “Batting Clean-Up and Striking Out” Glancing around my bedroom, I observe clean floors and homework assignments sprawled out on the table as my jumbled written thoughts are on the brink of being thrown away. My collection of books is lined up neatly on a shelf along with the stuffed animals my grown-up self does not play with anymore. I can hear down the stairs and I listen to the television playing the Cleveland Brown’s football game and the microwave signaling the finished result of the leftover brisket that was in the refrigerator. In Dave Barry’s essay, “Batting Clean-Up and Striking Out,” he explains that the majority of women fasten their focus on the unimportant aspects of life such as cleaning; yet through the…
In this article Robert Lipsyte talks about how a coach named Bill Stowe told him how there are two different kinds of men. That there are the jocks and there are the pukes. The jocks are the manlier men and the pukes are the softer men. Lipsyte then says how he thought that Stowe had misguided values of Jock Culture. Later he actually thinks that Stowe might have been right all along about how the world may be divided into jocks and pukes.…
One of the most recent ethical dilemmas in American sport is the Title IX lawsuit of Hernandez vs. Baylor University. This is without a doubt one of the most prominent Title IX lawsuits to be filed in the 2000s. The lawsuit filed by Hernandez specifically states that she was raped by a player on the Bears’ football team, and that the university police refused to accommodate to her specific needs following the incident, simply because the rape occurred off-campus. Also, the lawsuit claims that the university failed to properly train their employees on the appropriate responses to sexual assault, and other Title IX policies. Perhaps the most outstanding piece of information in this case is that the university was aware that the player involved,…
In the short story, Jock Culture , Robert Lipsyte discusses his interview with the Columbia University crew coach, Bill Stowe and the difference of what he called “jokes” and pukes”. He describes the jokes as “brave, manly, ambitious, focused, patriotic, and goal-driven” people and the “pukes” as “wolly, distractible, girlish, and handicapped” (Lipsyte, 305). I would call myself a jock just because I was a 3-season athlete throughout high school. I was captain of my high school volleyball team and my senior year year was named “League All-Star”, along with multiple other awards. Along with playing volleyball all year around, I also played basketball and golf.…
An article was written by Michael J. Broyde, published by CNN, and titled “Transgender Bathroom Issue: A Solution?”, gives a synopsis of the issue of letting people go into the bathroom of their identified gender, rather than just their birth gender. The article opens by just explaining how that this topic got into the limelight when the supreme court took up a case of a high school student trying to use a boy’s bathroom, and whether or not that should be allowed (Broyde). Broyde then goes on to explain that in many religions, including his own, using the bathroom is seen as an extreme private time and shouldn’t be shared with anyone regardless of gender. Then, Broyde gives what he believes to be the best solution to this problem is to make…

As tensions rolls deeper the couple begin to become more aggressive with their gestures and start to grab hold of the child. The argument took a turn for the worst as the audience is just left with the couple…
The video that appeared from 2005, showing Donald Trump making sexually aggressive comments was dismissed as being “locker room talk”. I do believe there are men out there that talk that way to each other about women. Donald Trump was in the spotlight in 2005 because of the show Apprentice that began in 2004. Being in the spotlight, no matter who you are, you have to watch what you say and who you say it to. Additionally, when deciding to run for president you have to know if you say things that can damage your reputation they are most likely going to come out.…
This study is so important because it shows how members of different sex’s deal with the concussion protocol. This is particularly important because the NFL, which is not just predominantly but a completely male area handles this protocol and issue compared to how the opposite sex in sports handles it. Concussion attitudes and beliefs were the strongest predictors of communication, and the small effect of knowledge on communication was transmitted nearly entirely through its effect on attitudes and beliefs. Much of the variability in communication was attributable to the sex of the coach and the sex of the team coached. Conclusions: these results serve as a starting point for the design of coach-targeted interventions that encourage communication about health and safety with…
The PBS documentary League of Denial discusses the normalization of violence and masculinity. The documentary goes on to talk about the NFL’s denial of the connection of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and football. The NFL has been one of the United States leading representations in our cultures masculine ideologies. This men’s club view point of get back up and go back in, injuries be damned mentality, has allowed the NFL to keep the correlation of football head injuries mental health disease under wraps. If we look at this through a sociological lens, we would look at the role of social recognition has played in the idea that they can become wealthy, and idolized by millions.…
This is true also in the sports arena regarding respect for the female gender. Society judges the role that women play in “masculine” sport activities and reflects the roles of women when they are outside of their playing field (Flanagan 2). Consequently, many women do not want to play the sport, fearing they might be called a lesbian or homosexual. Society needs to…
Maybe this type of conversation would be okay once, but after a while I would get tired of it and honestly get…
Women are often paid much less than men because they do not generate enough attention for the public. If television stations aired more women’s sports, they would generate enough to fans to raise more money and receive high paychecks. Men sports teams are considered to be more popular and more exciting than women’s sports. If women’s sports were aired on the radio and television shows as often as men’s, they would have a chance to make more money. Also, men have excessive amounts of money given from salary to free gifts from big advertisement…
