After she refused to eat the fruit they suddenly became violent. They pinched, kicked and beat her trying with all their might to make her open her mouth to make her eat. However, Lizzie being the brave woman that she was never wavered. Once they started to pelt her with the fruit that her sister so longed for her mind went racing and she realized that her sister could have the fruit juice off of her body. She lay still as they abused her and the fruit burst against her skin, sticky and wet with sin she held fast with her iron will, ever determined to return home to her sister. Finally, when she knew she could take no more she grabbed her silver penny and she ran from the goblin men. Thinking only of her sister and so consumed with self-sacrifice that she never realized that through her fear there was not a soul chasing her. She ran and ran all the way home and cried out to Laura. She cried “Laura up the garden, did you miss me? Come kiss me. Never mind my bruises, hug me, kiss me, suck my juices squeezed from goblin fruits for you, goblin pulp and goblin dew. Eat me, drink me, love me; Laura make much of me; for your sake I have braved the glen and had to do with the goblin men.” (Norton p. 1506 ln. 464-474). Lizzie is the friend and sister we all should want to be and should strive to become. Her heroisms is admirable and without he this story would not have been possible, her character drove the whole story. Lizzie is the guiding light and the northern star to which directs Laura’s way. Lizzie is what during the Victorian era would consider a sensible woman. She is practical and is logical. She has seen the ways of the world and know how cruel it can truly be and knows that charming men usually have nothing a woman truly wants no matter the beautiful words they may use as an advantage. Lizzie knows that she is a woman alone and that she must take care of herself regardless of how things transpire she carries responsibility in her property and assets as well as the well-being of her sister. She is a brave woman who has an iron will and a kind, forgiving heart. Lizzie is the definition of a friend, a sister and most importantly a strong independent
