Personal Narrative: Living With Loss

Living With Loss Two days after I turned nine, my world came crashing down. That’s what I thought any way. The Dr.Seuss quote “Sometimes you never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory” gained more meaning than I ever thought it would. Our family was somewhat close at this time, but we had a few members that put the ‘fun’ in dysfunctional. We all spent a lot of time together on the farm in the summer and fall. December 17th, 2006 is a day that left a wound in my heart. That’s the day it all began.
My sister threw my door open and flipped the light on. I was sound asleep to this point. Saying my sister is a drama queen, is the tip of the ice burg. She began to yell at me. I was startled awake, so I wasn’t sure I heard what

It felt like an eternity. We all celebrated my Mom’s birthday and Valentine’s Day. My Uncle Roy called and sang to her. For some reason, she didn’t answer the phone. He left it on her voice mail. A few days later, we got yet another phone call. Uncle Roy was sick. That’s all we knew. Everyone took off to the hospital in Jonesboro. Upon arrival, we found out he was having heart problems. Uncle Roy was not a small man by any means. He weighed at least three hundred and fifty pounds and was well over six feet tall. The doctors at the hospital were concerned. You could see it in their faces before they even spoke. He needed medical treatment they didn’t have here. They had two options. He could either be transferred to University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Little Rock, or they could take him to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Using an air ambulance was out of the picture. He simply would not fit. Uncle Roy’s profession of choice was farming and crop dusting. One of his friends was, and still is, the pilot of an air ambulance. They tried everything. The only other option was a ground ambulance. They opted to send him to Memphis, Tennessee since it was closer. This all happened early in the week. The medical team at Baptist Memorial worked quickly. He soon had a diagnosis of heart problems. He began to get better as the week went on. As soon as my sister, Micah, and I got out of school on Friday, we headed south. Mom booked us a hotel room. We were staying until late Sunday evening. God had other plans for us. Uncle Roy had been moved to the Cardio Vascular Intensive Care Unit. Visiting hours were very limited. We decided to do a little shopping between visits. Mom, Micah, and I went to buy my aunt a belt. She had forgotten hers at home. We made a quick trip back by the hotel room to grab a few more things to take to my aunt. It was getting close to visiting time again. When we stepped off the elevator on our floor, Mom’s

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…
