Chronic asthma is an increasing issue in the United States, primarily in children living in inner-city regions. Two strong environmental factors, ozone and airborne particles, have shown to play an important role in the onset of this issue. The rise in temperature correlates with an increase in ozone, resulting in an increased risk of developing asthma. High exposure to environmental air particles, such as those exhibited from major highways, have also shown to increase the development of asthma and asthmatic symptoms. Costs for health care treatment for asthma also creates challenges. Families of children with asthma often pay the costs of treatments, prescriptions, sick leave, and emergency room visits.
