What should be done is similar to how the state of California manages the minimum wage. The executive branch of the state should pass a law mandating individuals who own a business or businesses in California to pay their employees, that work full time and live in California, a living wage. The living wage will be determined on how many dependents they employee has and the region they live in. The living wage calculator, created by Dr. Amy K. Glasmeier and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will be used to determine their living wage. Everyone will has access to it for free to ensure that their employer is paying them the correct wage and for employers to be aware of how much to pay their employees as well. To help make this happen, the state will lower taxes for businesses so they could provide their employees with fair wages. Instead of businesses paying a lot in taxes they could take some of that money and give it to their employees, which will spend it on items with sales tax that go to the state anyways. The executive branch of California should pass a law to make employees receive a living wage because it will have a great impact on the economy without compromising

The Harvard Living Wage Sit-In protest was ultimately successful because it achieved most of its goals in the end. The university administration finally agreed to negotiate with the workers and students. Then Harvard made significant changes in terms of workers’ living wage. For example, the university promised to pay service workers at least $10.83 (improved from $9) per hour, to pay equal wages to directly hired and outsourced workers, and to provide janitors with vacation, sick days, and free health care. Although it was still less than that ten years ago, it was a significant improvement at that time.…

The central issue is to investigate and evaluate how expanding the minimum wages influence the welfare of poor workers at child care centers, and set up the value of minimum wage increments for child care instructors. A convincing explaination for a national minimum wage is to build the livelihoods of poor households with individuals in the work force and lift the low-wage laborers out of poverty by expanding their wages. In any case, this point is typically missed in the discussions over the benefits of a high minimum wages. Basically, a high minimum wage will achieve diverse effects over states. Sabia and Burkhauser brought attention to that even as decreasing destitution levels among low-wage laborers is an admirable policy objective, evidence…

Richard Freeman published the article “Fighting for Other Folks’ Wages: The Logic and Illogic of Living Wage Campaigns” in January of 2005 to inform readers about implementing a living wage for many low-paid workers across the United States. Currently, people in major cities across the country are trying to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. Even though many groups advocate such changes, others worry about possible negative economic effects from creating a living wage. In the article, Freeman analyzes both arguments for and against creating a higher wage for workers. He discusses real world examples and says why the decisions are good or bad for society.…

The topic area that I am most interested in at this time is the minimum wage in the United States (U.S.). The title on this paper is not the title for my dissertation, I just haven’t thought of one as of yet. The reason this topic has captured my attention, is because there are numerous research available on the subject. However, I didn’t see a lot of recent research about certain occupations that I believe should be a good contribution to the study. Majority of the research that I have seen so far, are related to teen unemployment, the poverty level and tip workers.…

Seattle, Washington is a great example of how to enact a steep wage increase with minimal impact on small businesses. Employers who have more than five hundred employees are required to the minimum wage of all employees to at least $15 an hour in a period of three years, as reported by Peter Kelley for the University of Washington. At the same time, businesses with fewer than five hundred employees have small, incremental wage changes that occur over a period of seven years to allow the business to slowly adjust to the new state minimum, Kelley details. This model has proven to be successful thus far, although it is still in its early stages so long-term effects have yet to be…

Although this is true that the process for this to be passed will take some time it is not impossible. In 2013, the Fair Minimum Wage Act was introduced and not many believed it would pass due to the bill being opposed by the restaurant lobby and certain Republican lawmakers (Stuart). However, the bill was passed and granted eight dollars and twenty cents with the minimum wage going up ninety-five cents each year for three years (“S.40-113th Congress...”). This also granted tipped employees to be paid three dollars instead of two dollars and thirteen cents (“S.40-113th Congress...”). Although this may seem like an elongated process, at least there was action taken.…
