In 1964, Martin Luther King, Jr in his Nobel Prize lecture examined the evils of the modern world. He spoke on how poverty was one of those evils. “The poor in America know that they live in the richest nation in the world, and that even though they are perishing on a lonely island of poverty they are surrounded by a vast ocean of material prosperity” (Nobel Media AB, 1964, para.22). Not much has changed since his eloquent speech. Participating in the Community Action Poverty Simulation provided insights confronting the needs of poor individuals and families.

At last measure, 11.2 million extremely low-income households competed for 7.3 million units affordable to them – a 3.9 million unit shortfall. And with 7.7 million unassisted very low-income renters with worst case housing needs in 2013 as defined by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), only just over a quarter (26 percent) of eligible very low-income households received rental assistance (Charette, Herbert, Jakabovics, Marya, & McCue, 2015, p. 5). Clearly, research supports my experience about the financial burdens of the family living with poverty. Trying to live on a budget, with the high cost of living, mouths to feed and buying clothes to wear, makes it very difficult to balance and remain solvent.

Although we were treated well, I had limited interaction because of my work obligations. However there never seemed to be complaints about how the treatment or services. It was hard to fathom all the different services available. We only hit the tip of the iceberg in terms of benefits.
Do you feel or think differently about those in your community who face the daily challenge of "living in poverty"?
I realize the challenges people face “living in poverty.” With all the news media discussing the federal assistance programs and the federal budget deficit, I realize there is a great need. With that being said, I believe there are some people who make poor decisions, in which they do not take responsibility for, and want the government to bail them out. They may even abuse the system to get what they want. For these people, I feel anger towards because it stigmatizes people in really rough situations that want to work their way out poverty.
