Growing up in a town with a population of around two thousand people means being a part of a tight knit community. I was surprised to find that same sense of community living in a town of over ninety-six thousand people. I have built friendly relationships with many of my neighbors and attended community events and gatherings in the same way I did living in the country. Portsmouth actually offers more community events than Lavaca does.
Living in Lavaca was a bit of a hassle when I would like to go shopping at the mall, enjoy a movie, or dine at a restaurant. The nearest town that offers shopping, dining, and entertainment was about a thirty-minute drive away. I had to drive my personal vehicle when taking this trip because public transportation was not available in the country. Access to shopping, dining, and entertainment is much more convenient in Portsmouth. Many places are within walking distance or I can choose to ride one of the many forms of public transportation available. The job opportunities, however, are much different. The farming industry is the main source of income available in the Lavaca. Portsmouth, on the other hand, offers a wide variety of opportunities in the military, industrial, and service sectors.
Some people may argue that country life is better than city life. It is just a difference in preference. After experiencing both city and country lifestyles, I have found that Portsmouth, Virginia has more ways of enriching my life than living in Lavaca,
