On September 20th, Judge Davies withdraws the state militia from Central High School and orders them to leave completely, leaving the Little Rock police department to carry on with the protection of the students and to sustain the vicious crowd. That day the nine African Americans who daringly entered Central High School were then nicknamed the Little Rock Nine. Throughout this time as the Little Rock Nine attempted to have a full day of classes as they made an entrance into the school an alarming threatening riot had broken out. On September 25 with the help of 11,500 soldiers the Little Rock Nine finally entered and attended a full first day of class at Central High School. The riot began to get bigger, but with the service of the army, they helped maintain control and successfully helped the first day in history of taking desegregation into action and allowed for it to finally be applied and used in the U.S. after days and days of struggle to comply with the law. As Daisy Bates, who was the NAACP president at the time once said, “Anytime it takes 11,500 soldiers to assure nine Negro children their constitutional rights in a democratic society, I can’t be happy.” this stating that it is unbelievable that an inhuman crowd would riot to prevent the privilege of a certain group and take it to extreme lengths that this fearless group be denied of their rights.
