Have you ever imagined what it would be like to go to school and be the only one of your race? To be bullied and separated because you weren't a certain color? Before the little rock nine happened schools were way different. There were schools for white students, and there were schools for black people. Many of the states had laws that the schools had to have a separate school for whites and blacks. On May 17, 1954 there was actually a law that said white and blacks would go to school together. So many people were upset with this law that in 1955 the law was dropped. Schools went back to being interrogated by the law passed by court.
Elizabeth Eckford was the first one to arrive to Little Rock. She arrived at the school alone from riding the bus. The other eight were, Pulaski County, Carlotta Walls, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Minnijean Brown, Melba Pattillo, Glory Ray, and Emest Green, which all arrived together that morning. The eight were drove by Bates, but they couldn't get a hold of Elizabeth because she did not have a telephone.
Elizabeth boarded the bus that morning at seven-thirty. When she got there she endured plenty of verbal harassment. When the other eight got there it didn't stop. Elizabeth was looking through the mob of people for someone who looked friendly. When she found someone the girl spit right in her face.
