As stated in The Challenge of Democracy, “Civil rights are powers or privileges that are guaranteed to the individual and protected against arbitrary removal at the hands of the government or other individuals.” (pg. 399). In the video, Eyes on the Prize Fighting Back, it talks about segregation in schools and how it began to ratify throughout schools slowly; however, there were certain cases that were presented in this video that went against the law and violated many of the black people’s rights because they were a different color compared to the whites. One of the most important cases, Brown v. Board of Education, ran by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to desegregate public schools. The Brown v. Board of Education had reached the Supreme Court by 1951.…

In the article “The Little High School That Could: Teacher Urges Latinos into College-- and is Not Rehired.” Beverly Beyette discusses the controversy ; that surrounded George Shirley at Alisal High in Salinas, California. Shirley was an English and History teacher at Alisal High in 1986, and he is well remembered as the teacher who pushed Latino students into some of the most prestigious universities in the country including some Ivy League universities. I agree with those ; hence, who think Shirley was a great teacher because he actually did something for his student…

The interview on "The Remarkable Story of the Battle to Integrate Little Rock's Central High School,” was heartbreaking to watch. This interview is the hard to envision that a child had to endure such horrible treatment. There are a couple of things that really disturbed me about how President Dwight D. Eisenhower responded by sending in soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock's Central High School to make sure the 9 students would be able to integrate with the other students. My heart broke when Melba Pattillo Beals explained being 15 years old and having to run for her life because adults, wanted to hang her and they were actually chasing her and her mother. When she said for the first time in her life her mother slapped her…

As a small, scrawny, confused 8th grade boy, the transition from a coed middle school - Roger Ludlowe Middle School - to Fairfield Prep was an enormous step for me socially and academically. At that time in my life, I was unsure if Fairfield Prep was going to be a good fit for me: all I had ever heard about the school were glowing reports from my older sister's friends who attended. Fortunately, looking back at it, attending Fairfield Prep was one of the most impactful and beneficial decisions I have ever made for myself as it inspired me to be "open to growth". This institution has not only pushed me academically, but it allowed me to stretch my comfort-zone and become more comfortable with myself.…

In some ways this has given me more opportunities, but in most cases this event has negatively changed everything around me. It had been a few weeks since your parents died in a tragic plane crash, though you didn’t feel all that sad. Of course, you were slightly upset, but it wasn’t that bad. Your parents had never really built an emotional bond with you. They were more like dictators, they forced you to be the three P’s: posh, proper, and polite. When you wanted to play outside with the other kids, they shook their head in distaste, your mother telling you that’s not what ladies do.…
