In the short story “Where Are You Going,Where Have You Been,” Joyce Carol Oates expertly executes the aspects of the horror genre by adding fairy-tale aspects like Cinderella and Red Riding Hood to characters and atmosphere; giving the tale an eerie feeling. The first thing that you notice about the wolf is the fact that he is wearing a bonnet in order to attempt a disguise. This shows how the wolf is willing to be as deceptive as possible to get what he wants from Little Red Riding Hood. Also, the fact that he is wearing a bonnet shows that he did in fact use the grandmother to satisfy himself as he had to undress her to be wearing her clothes. The next thing you notice is the fact that the wolf is lacking in disguise as the largest features of him are sticking out. His snout is showing which allows Red to see what a malicious creature he really is.…

The second “wolf” in this story is drastically subtler than the outwardly terrifying worm creature, this wolf is less physical and more conceptual. This ferocious and terrifying “wolf” is the universally known terrible feeling that we call grief. Grief is defined as “keen mental suffering or distress over affliction or loss; sharp sorrow; painful regret.” This definition fits perfectly with the story presented in Emily Carroll’s “Through the Woods” in the short story “The Nesting Place”. Our dreary yet relatable main character Mabel, or Bel, is not only haunted by the monster in this story; she is also haunted by the grief that comes with the loss of her mother.…

The Color Red: The Key to Woman’s Sexual Maturity The color red has always had some significant meaning, whether it is in real life, myths, legends, or even fairy tales. Two fairy tales which illustrate the symbolic meaning of the color red are two tales about Snow White; Brothers Grimm’s “Snow White” and Lasiar Gheug, “The King of Ireland’s Daughter.” In these fairy tales red resembles the opportunity for women to be rescued by a prince and possibly reach sexual maturity, but the shedding of blood is symbolic and necessary for women to reach their sexual maturity. The women who fully mature give birth to one or more children, whereas the woman who does not shed any blood does not give birth.…

On page 110, she states that the wolves eyes, “shine like candle flames, yellowish, reddish…” This fire imagery shines bright in the reader’s mind, the heat and desperation of the flames reflecting the wolves and their desperation for their next meal. Carter also spends a significant amount of time describing the way the girl’s clothes went into the fire. On page 118, Carter states, “The thin muslin went flaring up the chimney like a magic bird and now came off her skirt, her woolen stockings, her shoes, and on the fire they went…” The image of not just her clothes burning, but floating off like a magic bird, reflects the way they were used as identification and restriction earlier in the piece.…

Charles Perrault’s “Little Red Riding Hood” and Brothers Grimm’s “Hansel and Gretel” are two well-known fairytales in today’s society. Both tales incorporate the key literary elements that define a typical fairy tale. The significance in these specific elements comes from the effect they have on the plot and the consequential moral of the tale. Although “Little Red Riding Hood and “Hansel and Gretel” are two texts with distinct differences regarding their plots, the characters, setting, and themes incorporated into both respective tales relate closely to each other. These similarities largely identify the shared intention of the fairy tale authors for creating their individual tale and the significance of the certain themes and morals that…
