What ever happened then, is just one thing to improve on. In Howard Pyle’s The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, protagonist Little John’s personality was altered by the greed for the sheriff’s wealth, the fondness and friendship with Robin Hood, and the death of his leader and enemies. Little John was blinded by the greed that came upon him, the opportunity of a new beginning came and in a split-second, he took it; He becomes the Sheriff’s right hand man betraying Robin Hood for the lifestyle he’s never had. He’d be able to eat rich dishes, drink wine, and sleep until late hours in the morning (Pyle 65). By doing so, Little John becomes a big, pampered, and overdramatic man. Realizing he made a huge mistake (by leaving Robin Hood and the band), Little John concludes that he must make it up to his comrades. He befriends the Sheriff’s cook and persuades him to join the band; he then takes the Sheriff’s silver plates and sets off to find Robin Hood. Not impressed with the silver plates, Robin Hood still accepts Little John and the cook into the band (74). Thinking about the future, Little John communicates with Robin Hood so they can spend the rest of their lives together as brothers and plan on dividing their money (194-195). Additionally, Little John was taken and tied to a tree by the Sheriff of Nottingham. Threatening to draw him behind a horse and hang him, the Sheriff fails to do so; Robin Hood comes to save Little John just-in-a-nick-of-time.
