For me, it pointed out that whatever leader is in control your country, you have to follow their rules and beliefs despite what you feel or believe in like the century in this novel where Chairman Mao Zedong was the leader. It doesn’t seem fair that there’s no freedom of speech where keeping silent is often your reason for survival as speaking out would outcome as a harsh punishment. With any education being forbidden, I could see how the boys would appreciate having in their grasps the only link to the outside world. This novel made me question what it’s like to forcefully abandon your family and be sent into the unknown. The boys were very lucky they had each other to ask for advice and to keep each other company. Their passion for reading and their superb acting ability of story-telling was the key aspect that motivated them to survive. These days’ books seem to be a rare commodity. Anyone can read an entire book on the computer without ever having to go to the library. Is this really a good idea? For me, words on a page bring meaning as you can feel and connect more with the characters. You can pick it up at any time and refer to any page at a given moment.
