Of a Passage in Sandburg’s “Fog”
The fog comes
On little cat feet.
It sits looking
Over harbor and city
On silent haunches
And then moves on.
In this poem, Carl Sandburg not only created a substantial metaphor between the fog and a cat, but also created vivid imagery in a quick manner .The speaker of this poem relates the fog to a cat as it explores the city, similar to how a curious feline would. The speaker is an unknown observer, scrutinizing the fog as it engulfs the harbor and city. The haze is introduced as a cat lurking through the city; the repetition of the “T” sound in “little cat feet” is an example of consonance which creates an image of a cat with tiny paws stalking its’ prey (2).
